His worst moments were the the Millwall/Stoke games around mid-December, but I think he has been one of most consistent players since McGhee brought him back into the team after that bad spell.

I would tend to agree - I was suprised to see McGhee say he's been sub-par recently, but I guess this was part of the tactics he's been using to talk him round.

I'll never understand the vitriol dished out at him by some, albeit probably a minority.

You may be right. I just remember Chadwick murdering him for the entire first half and then Pardew showing his managerial skills my substistuting him.
