Thatcher and her policies destroyed the infrastructure of this once great country, and caused most of the problems that we still have today - unemployment, social unrest, rich/poor divide, fat cat industrialists, warmongering, educational decay, the fall of the National Health Service (once the envy of the world), pensioner poverty, high utility costs, rampant inflation (in her time) etc, etc

I have to say Ernest that this post and the 1st post on this thread are two of the funniest jokes you have ever come out with!

If anyone ever needs proof that Ernie is a wind up merchant, this thread is it!

Exactly & that's the problem. Blair was elected by those disallusioned by 12 years of Tory rule & rather than a 'socialist' goverment got 'New Labour' which with Blair, Straw & Blunkett is the most right wing/reactionary goverment we have had certainly in the last 50 years. They have simply followed Thatcherite policy & in many areas e.g. privitisation, social & foreign policy; indeed have out toried the tories.

We now have a situation where if for example Ken Clarke becomes Tory leader, they will be on the left of New Labour with the Liberal Democrats; the new socialist party at least in respect of much of their policy.

Time for change perhaps in how we elect our parliament & to do away with the so called two party system?

Um. Not quite.

Labour did outlaw (finally) clause 28 from the Local Government Act. That was a piece of pure Tory spite and bigotry. I don't recall any privatisation schemes under Labour - there was nothing left to sell. Indeed, the railways have - in all but name - had to be re-nationalised. Labour's policies on Europe are a tad more inclusive than Thatcher and Major.

And just because Ken Clarke is largely pro-European hardly makes him 'left-wing'. To call him that is seriously laughable.

As for the rest of the Tory Party, the main reason they haven't got close to winning a general election for 13 years is because they still feel themselves to be the ruling class, and haven't cottoned on to the fact that, until they become a modern, all-inclusive collective, they never will. They are still (as are the Tories on here) harking back to their glorious leader, living in Maggie's shadow while the rest of us have moved on.

I think you'll find they forced through PPP on the tube, but then champagne socialists don't use public transport,so what do they care.

So, privatisation under the Tories is GOOD, and under Labour it's BAD? Per-lease.
