I know of somebody who purchased (jointly) a "copy" of a painting for £75k which they have proved is an original and worth up to £100M.

An acquaintance of mine of a few years ago, extremely well heeled chap was telling me of his main occupation. He was considered an expert in antique furniture and paid huge sums to authenticate furniture due for sale in the large auctioneering houses in London. He was asked to look at this particular piece which had baffled many others. It had sold for millions previously. When faced with said furniture he catagorically said it was fake but was unable to state why. It again sold for millions. However the truth was he had actually forged that item some years before and always put his "mark"on his forgeries. His money had come from being a forger but a case of poacher turned gamekeeper
