Goldstone crowds over 30,000

How do all you guys remember, do you keep diaries??? or just guess.

I know i done a handful of 30,000 games but i can't remember who we were playing.

Goodness knows how many games I went to at the Goldstone since my first in '66/67 including several with 30k crowds but curiously it is the Rochdale game in the 70's with a 34k crowd not so much for the footie as the images of thousands of fans locked out before the kick off. I'd never seen that before in dear old Brighton.

The thing I remember about the crowds of 30k plus in '78 was that although the visiting Clubs used to bring a sizeable and often noisy following they used to get blown away by the sound from the Albion fans which was all the more impressive given that the Goldstone was a pretty open ground so not a natural cauldron of noise. So it should be mega impressive if we get 30k rocking inside the Amex.

All from Palace '76 onwards (I would think). I say think because I have a shite memory for specific games and stats, but I started going in '74 and missed only a few home games until '82 when I joined the RAF and moved.

All from Wolves onwards.
Especially remember Bournemouth where they arrived early and 'took' the empty north stand but, by KO the stand was rammed full, the sweat was pouring (Boxing Day) and many crowd surges and things being thrown and there were police dogs going mad in the middle of the north!

Oh, and we beat them 2-0.

All of them from Bournemouth (Super Mac, 2 - 0 to us) except West Ham in 78 I think. I saw us beat West Ham 1 - 0 but I think that may have been a season later, in the top division.

heard some pompey got in the north before the game and got done! also a big pompey mob left before the end and walked down sackville road and came through the flats............. so i heard ???

certainly a lively evening,my abiding memory is of some pompey fan being carried around the pitch by the st john's ambulance on a strecher with 3 sailors helping

yeah,a common thing back then, other mobs arriving early and parking themselves in the north only to get a rude awakening, pompey got every bit as much as they gave that night,i think they were hoping to take liberties,as they did down at fratton a couple of times in the 70's

Many great matches! But 1958, 6-0 Watford for 1st EVER promotion, at an un floodlit Goldstone, on a glorious sweltering April Spring 5 00 evening kick-off in front of near record 31,000 odd - is without doubt my most memorable Albion experience. Nobody told relatively unknown Adrian Thorne that a draw would ensure Brighton won the Div3 South championship and join Div3 North winners as the 2 clubs promoted to 2nd divsion - he scored 5 - and was a member of one of the all time great Albion sides!

I was at the Fulham game 8 months later in front of Brightons record attendance but have no recollection of the game! Only the crush!

The massive 30,000+ crowds of 1978 are testament to the greatest Brighton era I've ever know. The extraordinary charisma of Peter Ward in his prime, together with the impeccable Mark Lawrenson, the dynamic midfield captaincy of Brian Horton supported by a host of other fine players in the post Brian Clough era made that Brighton a truly exciting team to watch. To finish joint 3rd with Spurs, 11 points ahead of the 5th team and loose out on marginal goal average (1.6939 - 1.6579) was my biggest ever disappointment! (Did get promoted following season!)

Home gates of 30,000 at Brighton in the modern, seated era seemed utterly fantastical just a few years ago. But the extraordinary momentum of the club and stadium has a last realized the potential of the huge Brighton conurbation where 30,000 crowds are beckoning. I just want to be at the historical first!.
