Then there needs to be space to run behind the goal celebrating

It's called the "Manchester United Gap", the edge of the grass is the line the ball has to cross for the opposition's goal to count

Anyone know why they marked out the pitch in the knowledge that they would just keep mowing it until the markings more or less disappear?

won't the squad need the lines on the pitch for when they train on it.....

if you look on the webcam they are putting the net on the goal at the north stand end

Looking at the north goal on the webcam, it looks like plain white nets with separate stantions. Nice and bellowy for when LuaLua unleashes a howitza!
