The major problem with high petrol prices is that it affects everybody, not just car drivers. Public transport costs goes up, food prices go up, etc... and this is coupled with higher energy bills all round

It means that the lower paid are financially worse off, and these tend to be the vulnrable member of society such as single parents, pensioners etc..

That's less the goverment's fault and more speculators', is it not?

Yes true, but we still pay a lot more fuel duty than the rest of europe

It would be a lot better if the government didn't waste money (which is suspect it does a fair bit), as then taxes would be lower. Though I suppose then people would become accustomed to the lower tax rate and then complain when the price of petrol goes up then! :thumbsup:
