You need to ring round as some clubs do (mainly bigger Youth Clubs) but many start at U7s as at U8s there are organised games by the leagues.

The problem is that most start at U7s, he could of course join an U7s team a year earlier.

There are clubs around who take kids from 5 years old - for example Worthing Town Youth. Try contacting the Sussex FA as they may be able to point you in the right direction.

Some of the Albion in the Community centres will take the u6's. I used to assist in the Worthing centre and we took kids from age 5.

Coaching the little ones is not as easy as it first appears - even to a parent of a child of that age. You need to be very careful with what you say to them, body language (a 6'1" bloke like me can look like a big scary monster to a little 5 year old so you are encouraged to crouch right down to their height) and also have a lot of patience. Because of this, I think some clubs don't bother as kids who can't be in 'teams' do not fit their structure and they don't have anyone to coach them. It's a shame because coaching kids at that age can be very rewarding. At WTYFC we have specialist coaches who look after the little ones.

The FA won't let them take part in competitive football at that age. The u7 & u8 leagues do not publish tables and any tournaments are done on the basis that they all get a trophy for taking part rather than any actual winners.

If you can't find anywhere drop me a PM and I'll have a word with a coach who is very well connected around the Brighton area to see if he knows of anyone that can help.

Yep, get him signed up with a club under the formal regulations of the FA, rather than just enjoying the pleasures of kicking a ball round a park with his mates. get his position in teh team sorted out, he needs to know whether he's a centre-forward or a left back, and he needs to know NOW.

This.

And if you think that's bad, wait until the poor lad has to play 11 aside at 10 years old - often on full size pitches

Agree 100%, 6 is far too young to be starting competitive football. Let him enjoy playing with his mates for another couple of years, develop naturally and then if he wants to join a team. Far too much pressure for a kid to have at that age

thing is kids dont play out like we used to
so to have someone he can kick a ball about with he needs a club of somesort . It does'nt have to be competitive just somewhere
he can go and play with others .If he learns anything thats a bonus

Macky - You're absolutely spot on and I think that as anyone involved in youth football will say that you've got the right attitude.

There are a lot of outstanding clubs in Sussex and as I've said on previous threads, many of whom have Charter Standard.

I would always recommend going to a couple of different clubs in your local area just to get a feel for how well the club is being run, what their priorities are with the kids and also - more importantly, how the coaches interact with the other children.
