Victor Bhanerjee's notebook
From playing a major part in retaining the Ashes through embarassing drunken parades to foolish cavalier captaincy and an inablity to admit mistakes.

Discuss.

remenissant of Botham situation before he was stripped of the captaincy and then went on to be a Titan in the world of cricket after he pummeled the Aussies starting at Headingley.

It is impossible not to draw these comparisons. Hopefully Vaughan will be back now. And more importantly we need JONES back!!!

Harsh on Freddie. He's been injured which has certainly affected his bowling and while he's not the greatest of captains, he's come up against an awesome Aussie side that really wanted the Ashes back. I don't think Vaughan would have done much better - come to think of it, a combination of Jardine, Hutton and Brearley wouldn't have done either.

Just out of interest how many of the current Aussie side would make their all time XI?

Warne
Ponting
McGrath
Gillcrist

any others?

Don't think Ponting and McGrath would, Warne certainly and Gilchrist probably.

ponting is arguably the best test batsman since Bradman. How many Aussies have taken more wickets than McGrath?

Hmm, not too sure of the similarity to be honest. Vaughan is a good capt, but wouldn't be there if his batting wasn't top notch, whereas dear old Mike's batting wasn't anywhere near the same class as Vaughan's.

Only 1, a certain Mr Warne. Not only would those 4 get into an Australian all-time XI you could argue that they would be in a World all time XI. Warne is the best spinner ever, McGrath is one of the best seam bowlers of all time, Gilchrist is the best keeper/batsman of all time. Only one who might not make it is Ponting but you'd have a case case for it.

i think we should leave off of Freddie for a bit. OK he is/was not a good captain. But if we are to beat the Aussies next time around (and we could) we will need Freddie to be fired up, hungry and with a taste for Aussie blood - and not broken by an over-zealous press and fuckwittedly demented fans.

How many Australians have played as many games as McGrath?

Ponting has got some fine figures but he's also played against some weak sides and in an awesome team.

I don't dispute that they're fine players and would certainly come close to an all-time Aussie team but there are plenty of good Aussie batsmen out there who'd have a prior claim. Since Bradman, I can only think of Greg Chappell but there were quite a few pre-Bradman.

McGrath has been consistantly good over a long period. That for me is a fine and rare quality.

Ponting may well have played against some poor opposition but he can only beat what he has put infront of him. Pele scored loads of goals against toss opposition but he is still one of the best.

My point exactely. In fact the only bloke between these two players has a dodgy action too!

Hmm.... Clyde Walcott had a batting average eight runs better than Gilchrist. But that's slightly artificial as he'd have played on worst pitches in pre-protective clothing time.

Batsman today have it much easier - which is why we should look at their averages with a pinch of salt.
