The Lost Boy. Early 90's Werewolf flick heavily influenced by stuff like Twilight and Ghostbusters. Robert Smith, formerly of Goth Rock outfit, The Smith's made his feature film debut in this influential teen film. Meryl Streep plays a widowed mother who moves her children to Chicago only to find it's the Werewolf capital of San Francisco. Originally a book by Stephen King (The Fog, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less) it really captures the early 90's especially with the roles of a young Nicholas Cage and Bill Paxton as "The Frog Cousins". I won't tell you too much about the plot so as not to spoil it but 3 straight to dvd sequels have been produced, the last one produced in 1994 starring Daniel Radcliffe as a man who turns horses into monsters. Was good, 9/10.

Oh, I see. It's some sort of attempted joke thing you're doing.

Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters
I liked this. I was surprised to enjoy the first film as much as I did, it was funnier than I was expected, and have since read the books. On reading the books I was amazed how much was changed, including stuff that had a knock on effect for this film. So again, there were a lot of changes from the book, some were understandable, some seemed a bit unnecessary and seem to create potential problems for later films.

Some of the more sentimental moments were not acted that well, but others were fine, there was some humour to it, but it was dialled way down. The new character, Clarisse (who was eliminated from the first adaptation and some of her traits given to Annabeth) was fine as the tough girl rival, with a certain Yancy Butler-ness to her, but often delivered her lines as if she was practising them in front of a mirror.

Nathan Fillion was a brief bright moment, making a joke about a popular cancelled TV show. Anthony Stewart Head wasn't given anything particularly meaty to no, and Stanley Tucci seemed wasted.

Not as good as the original, but a decent follow up, though it ended a little abruptly and it felt like a TV show ending rather than a movie ending.

RED 2
Again, decent, but not as funny as the first film. There seemed to be an inconsistency to whether the good guys would kill or not. Didn't seem to flow that well, and some characters and side plots seemed unnecessary, or jolty - changing direction with little explanationm and a significant character's death was not really treated with the gravity it probably deserved.

I'm not sure if it was just the screening, but the sound seemed a little off, like scenes were poorly dubbed like when you see an outside scene but it sounds like they are talking inside, that kind of bad quality.

The Wolverine 3D
M'eh. Seemed if more disjointed than RED 2. It was Wolverine, doing a wolverine movie. It was fine for what it was. It seemed quite low key after the previous two films, and it felt like the infrequent swearing seemed quite unnecessary.

Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa
I have never really been a fan of Alan partridge, Steve Coogan has occasionally made me laugh. I didn't have particularly high hopes, but I went anyway. There were a few laughs (others in the audience seemed to laugh more than I did). It was all right, enough laughs for me not to feel it was a waste.

Kick Ass 2
I'd seen a few less than enthusiastic reviews, so went in with low expectations. I'd say it met them. It wasn't bad, but wasn't the breath of fresh air the first one was. There was some unnecessary toilet humour that seemed to stand out because it's not really a gross out film, the violence seemed even more cartoonish than the previous film, and it felt like two films merged in to one, with one following hit girl and one following kick ass, and it seemed like to fit them both into one film they cut out important scenes from each storyline.

2 Guns.

2 decent actors in Walberg and Washington and some good action and comedy. The plot is confusing at times and nasty on occassions including a scene of animal cruelty , my number one hate.

It is fine but nothing special.

6.5

Oblivion

Nice premise, and decent sci-fi - But let down by the tedious SFX chase scenes and quintessentially American cheesy romancey bollocks. Decent performance from Cruise as to be expected.

6/10

Saw this on my flight....... ok but nothing special.

Hither (sometimes Thither)
Elysium was me and the girlfriend's choice this evening. She's the squirmish sort who doesn't always like to see someone's face blown off. I am that sort though, therefore quite enjoying it. Ok the narrative didn't always stream together smoothly and the corniness was sometimes a bit sickening and lame, but the face being blown off scene had me ohmygoddishly stunned. Graphics great. Nowhere near as good as District 9, the same director at the helm, but similar in its shallow base political statement and in its tone in the dusty squalor in the favela of future LA. Jodie Foster is horrendously bad, but all in all some amazing graphics and Sharlto Copley is excellently evil.
Hope the director gets some slightly newer ideas to step away from the mild Cronenburgian robobodyporn and have a go at something else. An impressive one-trick pony thus far though.

I think I generally liked it. It was a bit patchy and there was a bit more gore than I was expecting. Sharlto Copley was fun, Jodi Foster and her accent were annoying. It was a little obvious with it's political parallels and a bit too obvious, but a fine enough.

Elysium - Absolutely bloody superb. Much better than District 9. Interesting story, non stop action, a seriously beefed up Matt Damon, a monstrously evil Jodie Foster hamming it up, an excellent Baddy, superb visuals, thumping adrenaline pumping music. What was not to like ? 8.8

Was in a bit of a FILM WATCHING mood today, so I watched two films which have hit the cinema screens this year, both leading roles are two big Hollywood names.

First was Oblivion , a decent watch but I thought that a film starring Morgan Freeman AND Tom Cruise would be epic, turned out just to be a pretty decent sci fi, with its great but pretty stupid moments. 7/10, and that's being generous.

Second was World War Z. Not very good really, a bit like 2012, the main character escapes certain death about 19 times throughout. I mean that scene where they were allowed to board a plane which was already starting it's take off was stupid. 5/10.

Disappointed really with these two films which were meant to be "epic" according to my friends, just average films really...:nono:

Hoping to see Simon Pegg and Nick Frost's new film soon I loved Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the dead so it should be a decent viewing.

The Way Way Back

Saw this with the family at the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. From some of the same creative team as Little Miss Sunshine and a similar Coming of Age for misfit amercian kids vibe. This time its a 14 year old lad who is taken on the summer break from hell with his Mum and new Step Dad plus precocious teen daughter. He unearths what can only be described as a cross between a Barbie bike and a chopper in the garage and on his lonely escapism biker ride happens across the Water Wizz water park - and a whole new world! Very funny , great performances, enjoyable evening.

Riddick
Pretty much more of the same. It was slow to start, perhaps too slow, very little of the first half hour really fed in to anything later. Some mildly amusing tough guy lines, and didn't water down the violence too much, but some things seemed like they weren't sure where they were going with it so contradicted themselves. Generally it was eh.

We're The Millers
Did travel too far into gross out comedy, has its heart in the right place, just wasn't funny enough. I just don't find Jennifer Anniston convincing as a sexually alluring person.

The Way Way Back
This was rather good. A strong cast with a good script and some genuinely funny moments.

You're Next
Decent horror movie, again, didn't hold back on the violence, but also had a dark humour to offset the gore. Had some good scares. It was predictable to an extent, as the finale approached there were two or three ways I trout it could go, and it went with one of them, but it allowed a small amount of doubt.

I was disappointed that the bad guys explained their motives, and the ordinariness of the motive given the extreme nature of the crime, but like I say, a decent horror film.

Pretty good. Great to see at the cinema witha decent story and you can see the director has put a lot of effort in. But it does get a bit OTT towards the end

I was disappointed as the plot and structure was all a bit obvious, however I like the themes carried over from his last film district 19, robot police and security, computer scanning, waste filled planet full of ghettos and the separation in this case of haves and have nots. Was hoping Jodie would make the film but bar her speaking french both her and Matt's main characters could have been played by different actors possibly better. Still good effects and moved along at a good pace.
