Hamburger Hill and Casualties of War are both very good and what about Platoon and The Thin Red Line ?

There is one, the six hour version of Das Boot (with sub-titles) which is so far ahead of all the others it is ridiculous.

Das Boot (The Boat) - Rotten Tomatoes

The shorter versions lack the suspense, but are still good. If you have not seen go for the longer version.

OH! What a Lovely War!

Actually an anti-war film. One of the best films ever made in my opinion, and filmed on the West pier. If you can watch the closing scenes filmed on the downs without a lump in your throat you must be made of stone.

But it's never on the tellybox!

Empire of the Sun.

Spielderg's greatest ever film, in my opinion.

All quiet on the Western Front was another good one.

Good shout there mate. Also Spielberg found the talent of Christian Bale at age 12.
