Braeburn, good flavour, firm to the bite can't be beaten in my opinion. However a freshly picked Discovery does come close, you have to pick them and eat them straight away, leave them in the fruit bowl for more than a day and they ain't worth eating.

Don't care as long as it is in Union Jack packaging.
Sadly that seems to be rarer and rarer.
I refuse to purchase French Apples...what do they know about apple growing?

Eggmundo has the right idea. If you go to West Deane's Apple Affair in October you can try 100+ native varieties. Each area of the country has its own variety that seems tailor made for it.
