I differ from everyone;

Pictures of You.

followed by Boys Don't Cry

Was going to give an honourable mention for Pictures of You, disappointed no one has said it. Quintessentially 80's tune.

Probably.

The correct answer is absolutely Just Like Heaven. Not just a perfect pop song, but THE perfect pop song.

Special mentions for Play For Today, Apart and Trust too.
I'm afarid John Peel (RIP) and I would have to disagree with you there mate, Teenage Kicks was and always shall be the definitive perfect pop song.
As for a best Cure track, to quote Robert himslef that would be "to dream of impossible things" - how can you limit it to one, I couldn't even get close to cutting it down to a top ten..... The Cure, simply the best band ever, IMHO.

If you're going to go off at a tangent, then the correct answer to that question is actually the Lemonheads' version of Different Drum.

But we digress.

This however I agree with 100%.

For dark moods I'll take anything off Pornography, with One Hundred Years probably shading it. In upbeat moods, I often find myself humming the opening bars to In Between Days. The original 7" picture sleeve version of Boys Don't Cry (b/w Plastic Passion) is tremendous - way better than the 12" re-release with the overly remixed guitar that came out a year later - and (because in those days as a nerdy teenager I was sad enough to keep track of such things) I happen to know it is my most-played single of all time. I wore out two copies of it. Why Can't I Be You? is my favourite Cure 12".

And yes, I'm so old I remember when Robert Smith was thin and had short hair: My fondest Cure moment was seeing them in 1979 at their first major London headline gig (the Lyceum). Three Imaginary Boys had just come out and apart from a couple of singles that was all the songs they had. They had to play 10.15 Saturday Night twice - once during the set and again as the encore. The moshing (before the term was invented) during the encore version was immense. Later the same year they supported the Banshees on tour whilst Robert Smith was moonlighting as their guitarist.

My favourite John Peel/Cure memory is also from 1979. After Three Imaginary Boys had just come out he randomly played Subway Song, having never heard it before. He was wearing headphones with the sound up, and the scream at the end took him completely by surprise, leaving him in stunned silence for about 10 seconds afterwards - by his own admission, he almost wet himself with the shock. It was a beautiful radio moment.

However, if push comes to shove (and there was certainly a lot of that during the aforementioned encore), I would stick my oar in with the Just Like Heaven crowd - I might nominate that as one of my desert island discs. In fact, the whole of Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me holds a lot of very fond personal memories (i.e sex!) for me.

While I don't rate The Cure as my favourite of all time, they were stupendously reliable and they have the distinction in my mind of being the only great band from the late 70s to make it through the entire 1980s without becoming shit*.

*Simple Minds 'almost' matched them on that.

Respect due trufflehound, First time I saw them was at Chelmsford Odeon in '81 using Pink Floyd's PA to tour Faith with - remember the Carnage Visors peg animation support film? 15 more shows on and I saw them for the 3rd time in Perth last year doing an awesome 3 hour plus retrospective prior to recording that rather weak last album. They were as good as ever, even showed the speeded up Victoria to Brighton train video on the big screen behind them for Jumping Someone's Else's Train, last song - I was welling up I can tell you....

Incidentally, anyone going to see Dinosaur Jr, who do an excellent 'Just Like Heaven' cover, next month? Concord2, should be good...

Oh I think it was Dinosaur Jnr, that I saw at Reading, years ago.
They would wander to the side of the stage, swap guitars with a roadie, then smash 'lesser' guitar, before retrieving orginal guitar, and carry on playing.

I bet Paul Simonon, is grateful he didn't have an accountant watching his every move.

Apparently, Robert Smith now lives in Bognor Regis.

Very rock'n'roll !
