First time I had to sing it in the school choir, the teacher explained what it was all about and how you had to sing it as you meant it.

There were pubescent kids crying sniffling everywhere. Me included.

It never hurts to show a softer side

I don't like carols or anything religious, just don't believe in it.

you dont have to be religious or "believe in it" to like good music.

Mozart's Requiem is IMHO the most sublime piece of music ever written, the fact that it is a requiem for someone's wife is neither here nor there.

Exactly and that is a mighty good call. See Gwylan's comments on Bach too, somewhere.

That's why I like Silent Night. It's possible for a piece of music to evoke the tranquility of, say, a snowy Xmas Eve (although the Austrian priest who wrote it had clearly never done Xmas Eve down West Street) without caring whether the baby was the son of god and all that mullarky. You don't have to believe in god to think that cathedrals are fantastic either.

I never quite understood the lyrics.

Once in Royal david's City, stood a lowly cattle shed.

Well it didn't, as Bethlehem was a village in the district of Nazareth. I thought Royal David's City was Jericho.

Not exactly a Christmas Carol, but truly beautiful when sung at Christmas Eve 'Mass'... Cantique de Jean Racine - Gabriel Fauré

also O Holy Night by Placide Cappeau, set to haunting music by Adolphe Adam.

"And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and lineage of David)" (Luke Ch.2,v.4)

the Cantique de Jean Racine is what Shoreham Oratorio do best IMHO. Again a beautiful piece of music, superb setting ( St Mary De Haura) and faure at his best. When our conducter Michael Ades passed away, he requested we sing it at his memorial service - not a dry eye in the house.

I will look out for Holy Night. i have not heard that

The most common version is the one arranged by John Williams, and used in Home Alone (the scene when he runs into the church to escape the old man and he hears the choir practising).
