Out of interest, how many people actually take a companion with them?

I think I've now got 6/7 available to travel with me but I just don't see the point of it, mostly a legacy of years of escort missions in games...*shudder*

I take the reporter with me, she's coming on a bit strong though.
Apparently we can sleep together now and I get a special perk.

Huh. Something of a mild spoiler there but I'll forgive you!

Do you find any benefit to having a companion with you though? Of the 6 or so I've got there are probably two I'd think would be handy in a scrap but otherwise...

Sorry! Didn't even think :(

Main disadvantage, they get in the way far too often, especially when I'm sneaking around.
Main advantage, they can carry a load of crap for me which is great.

I've not played since Saturday, but I'm starting to enjoy it more. I'm doing quests for all the factions/groups as well as some of the side quests. I've got supply lines between 4-5 settlements and have built up some shelter and defenses for each one.
Coming along quite nicely!

I always have Codsworth with me simply because my character is called 'Mr *******' and I just love the way Codsworth says 'Mr *******'. Also he is handy to have to carry all the junk I have no room for.

Question for you both; does each companion have some sort of limit of how much they can carry? If not, I think I'll need to take a Strong friend with me...

Oh, also, can they die permanently? I would hate for them to be caught in the crossfire when a fatman is involved...

There is a weight-limit. I can't see the number anywhere but I think they can carry just as much as the main character can.
I don't think they can die permanently. Although I've read reports that the companion can disappear, but can be found at one of your settlements. Although this hasn't happened to me yet.

Hmm, I might have to take them with me when I go back to fully loot some of the locations I've been to recently as there were way too many goodies to take straight away.

I've heard stories of a vanishing dogmeat but that's about it...I'd be more concerned about being impacted by the Monsignor Plaza bug personally!

Yeah there is a weight limit. I think Strong can carry the most (around 270). I think the rest are around 160!

No heard of this?
I'll have a read into it.

I didn't for a while, though it might be that it seems to be least prevalent on the Xbox One so not really (hopefully) a huge concern for me.

You've probably read up on it now but for anyone else, there appears to be a bug affecting copies of the game where going to/discovering Monsignor Plaza will immediately crash the game without any reason. There's seemingly no way around this other than to await a patch.

Apparently Dogmeat doesn't prevent the Lone Wanderer perk from being active (I think it's a glitch so that may change in future) which means that he's effectively worth 250 weight plus you take less damage in combat.

Personally I prefer other companions for their long range support

I've used Dogmeat. Codsworth, MacCready and Piper. Can't say that any of them are any more useful in a fight than the others really. Except that Dogmeat doesn't have any guns so he's not that handy, although he does have other qualities.

The biggest thing for me is the carrying capacity. I like being able to have a missile launcher, fatman and various laser weapons on hand, but if I load myself up with them all I've got very little space for any other booty, hence the companion's capacity becomes a real boon.

I quite like how they add their own spin on proceedings too. The amount of dialogue they have that complements the quests is seriously impressive. But they do have a habit of getting in the way

How's everyone getting on?

I'm 27 hours in @ Level 26.
I think I'm a fair way through the main story but no way to tell really.

Enjoying it though!

I've no idea how many hours I have played, but am around level 26 as well. Seem to be levelling very slowly as I constantly stop at every location I walk past to explore it in full.

It's the inner Wanderer in me I suppose

Wanted to check in and see how everyone's getting on? I'm level 80, still holding out on completing the main quest (because I don't want to have to side with anyone) but currently enjoying the Far Habour DLC :)

I'm stuck in the Mechanist Lair and it's absolutely doing my nut in. No matter what I try, it doesn't work...My previous save game of any note was from three months before and so I'm well and truly stuck until Bethesda finally get round to patching the game properly

Bought this game months ago, still haven't got in to it. Every time I play it I don't rate it and don't play for long each time.

Sad times. Are you console or PC? If the latter there should be some command wizardry you can try. If not, you're stuck like me unable to get Hancock as a companion cos of a stupid glitch on the PS4.

got to over level 100 with my first run through. I'm starting a lesiurely amble through at a higher difficulty and using all the new stuff from the dlc's and some mods to make new settlements. Currently putiing in scaffolding guard posts on the walls around Sunshine tidings co-op
