That game had two far-reaching effects: they reckon the disillusionment directly had a detrimental affect on German domestic attendances for years afterwards, plus it led to the introduction of the backpass rule.

It also led to the final matches in each group stage being played simultaneously.

Is there a result that ensures both teams go through, if so, that is the one it will be.

Going to watch the game in Salzburg Old Town tonight, expecting a cracking atmosphere, plenty of Germans around, and I expect them to win.

Agreed. The Austrians will have to "Climb Every Mountain" to beat their old rivals...

Agreed. The Austrians will have to "Climb Every Mountain" to beat their old rivals...

"I Have Confidence" that if they do, and it's "So Long, Farewell" to Germany, the local "Lonely Goatherd", chewing on his "Edelweiss", would swell with pride (indeed, he might say the event was one of his "Favorite Things"), and the hills there would be alive with the "Sound of Music", for at least "Sixteen, Going on Seventeen" hours.

Edit: watch out Germany, it could be a (von) Trapp.

Great goal from Ballack, but the ref was a freekin joke.

Another not hugely convincing performance from the boys, but there we are. There's no-one, from Franz Beckenbauer down, who thinks they can play as hesitantly as that against Portugal and get a result.
