Sussex crushed Essex by an innings and 120 runs in the Frizzell County Championship Division One clash at Colchester.
Needing 329 to avoid an innings defeat, Essex were bowled out for 209 with leg spinner Mushtaq Ahmed taking three for 83 to finish with a match haul of seven for 170.
That took his tally of victims for the season to 89.
After resuming on 23 without loss, Essex soon suffered a set back as Adams swooped on the ball at mid off to run out Darren Robinson with a direct hit in the day's first over.
The only substantial partnership involved Will Jefferson and Andy Flower who put on 85 for the second wicket.
During it Jefferson completed his second 50 of the match and even had the audacity to drive Mushtaq over his head for six.
Jefferson eventually fell for 59 when he put up a simple return catch to Robin Martin-Jenkins and when Flower prodded Mushtaq to short leg, Sussex made rapid inroads into the rest of the innings.
There were a few defiant blows from Ronnie Irani (38) and Graham Napier (21 not out) but Essex were soon left reflecting on a defeat which sends them deeper into relegation trouble.
Billy Taylor, the Sussex paceman, emerged as Sussex's most successful bowler in the second innings with four for 50 from 16.3 overs.
Sussex claimed maximum points for their eighth championship win of the season while struggling Essex had to settle for five.
