Sussex 612 v Essex 283 & 23-0 (following on)

Sussex moved inexorably towards the victory that will see them keep the closest of tabs on pacesetters Surrey.

After finally being bowled out for a massive first-innings total, the visitors saw off Essex's top-order resistance before enforcing the follow-on late in the day.

Darren Robinson (64), Will Jefferson (55) and Andy Flower (50) saw the reply get off to a fine start, but Mushtaq Ahmed (4-87) fought back with three wickets.

Mark Davis also chipped in with two wickets in the evening session as Essex lost 3-11 in the middle order.

They eventually crashed for 283 but managed to survive seven overs without any damage to their second innings before stumps.

Earlier, Matthew Prior and Jason Lewry frustrated Essex as their ninth-wicket partnership ballooned out to 141 runs.

Prior, 103 overnight, added another 50 as Sussex supplemented 91 runs to their overnight 521-8.
