Fault of Thatcher By: Enric González
If an credited Italian locksmith as Fabio Capello only can remove to the field a as laborious defense as the view before Germany, something burdens happens in English soccer. They are already many defeats from 1966. They are already too many failed selectors, too many generations of soccer players who have not obtained anything with their selection. It must have some reason for a so lasting disaster. I venture here from a culprit: Margaret Thatcher. English soccer used to be a very working subject. And, like so, he was full of pride, hierarchies and traditions. The great majority of the players came from families workers, because in the private boarding schools (obvious called “public schools”) that trained to the class leader gambled other things. The great Bobby Charlton, for example, was son and grandson of miners. Who did not take the working-class movement in the genes she learned, it in clothes: Michael Robinson usually remembers that when arrived at the first equipment of the Liverpool, his first mission consisted of cleaning the boots of the veterans. The technique never exceeded. Except for exceptions (Ramsey, Charlton, Moore and few more), the English soccer player was a type brioso and disciplined, able to compensate his deficiencies in the feet more running than the rivals, shaking one's head as if its life depended on it and sacrificing itself by the equipment. In the end, by all means, the English selection was destined to lose. Although the English invented soccer, immediately were others played it better. But English soccer, of equipment or selection, constituted an electrical spectacle. There were pauses nor no tricks. Although sometimes it would degenerate in correcalles, did not bore. Nor it suffocated. Thatcher, we said. Margaret Thatcher prevailed like objective to destroy the working culture that from the aim of World War II, aupada by necessary solidarity in the gray years of rationing, reconstruction and collapse of the empire, had begun to replace the old imperial culture. The unions were strong and the currency, weak; the subsidies and protectionism had created a less unjust and unequal society, but they ballast the Capitalism and the competitiveness of English products. Thatcher destroyed all that. Also it destroyed the social cohesion, cradle in a hierarchic system accepted by the great majority and in a proud working class of being it. The money assumed, still more that in the rest of the West, the supreme condition of tótem and unique reference. The English society became one of most unstructured of Europe. We put the case of the power station John Terry. And it is only a case. The 11 of September of 2001 caused an international when making fun of, completely drunk scandal, of American tourists who cried by the attacks. In 2002 it was processed by a brawl. In 2008 it was fined to park his sport car in a place of handicapped people. Earlier this year it tried to obtain that a judge prohibited to publish that she had lain down with the woman of his companion Wayne Bridge. He must be something familiar, because the past year its mother and their mother-in-law was fined to rob in department store, and his father was pillaged trying to sell cocaine. We did not speak, agrees to need it, of a poor family: Terry went to a normal school and from very small it had all the facilities to play soccer. I believe that the English soccer players, still more whom to the rest of the soccer players, to them a little would be suitable the old working discipline. The one that incarnated Bill Shankly, the mythical trainer of the Liverpool. A day, the Tommy power station Smith went to the training with a bandaged knee. " Quítate that bandage maricona of rodilla" , Shankly ordered to him. " It is that it hurts rodilla" to me; , it said Smith, one of the hardest defenses of England. Shankly trenched the subject: " Your knee? That knee is of the Liverpool! ". Then that.

bandage maricona of rodilla is a pouf/queer's knee bandage

If an accredited Italian locksmith as Fabio Capello only can extract to the field a defense as painful as the sight before Germany, something serious happens in the English football. They are already many defeats from 1966. They are already too many unsuccessful seleccionadores, too many generations of football players who have not achieved anything with his selection. There must be some reason for such a lasting disaster.

I venture from here a culprit: Margaret Thatcher.

The English football was usually a very working matter. And, as such, it was full of pride, hierarchies and traditions. The big majority of the players were coming from hard-working families, because in the private boarding schools (obviously so-called “ public schools ”) that they were forming to the leading class was played other things. Big Bobby Charlton, for example, was a son and miners' grandson. The one who was not taking the labor in the genes, was learning it in the wardrobe: Michael Robinson usually remembers that when it came to the first team of the Liverpool, his first mission consisted of cleaning the boots of the veterans.

The skill never remained. Except exceptions (Ramsey, Charlton, Moore and few ones more), the English football player was a guy spirited and disciplined, capable of compensating his lacks in the feet running more than the rivals, blending as if his life was depending on it and sacrificing itself for the team. In the end, of course, the English selection was destined to lose. Although the Englishmen invented the football, at once there were others that played it better. But the English football, of teams or of selection, was constituting an electrical spectacle. There were neither breaks nor tricks. Although sometimes it was degenerating in correcalles, he was not boring. Not abochornaba.

Thatcher, we were saying. Margaret Thatcher imposed on herself as target to destroy the working culture that from the end of the Second World war, helped up by the necessary solidarity in the gray years of rationing, reconstruction and collapse of the empire, had started replacing the old imperial culture. The syndicates were strong and the currency, weakly; the subsidies and the protectionism had created a less unjust and unequal society, but they were ballasting the capitalism and the competitiveness of the English products.

Thatcher destroyed all that. Also it destroyed the social cohesion, based on a hierarchic system accepted by the big majority and in a working class proud to it be. The money took up office, moreover than in the rest of Occident, the condition of supreme totem pole and the only reference. The English society turned into one of more desestructuradas of Europe.

Let's put the case of central John Terry. And it is only a case. On September 11, 2001 it caused an international scandal on having made fun, completely drunk, of a few American tourists who were crying for the offences. In 2002 it was processed by a quarrel. In 2008 it was fined for parking his sports car in a square of handicapped persons. At the beginning of this year it tried to achieve that a judge was prohibiting to publish that he had gone to bed with the wife of his partner Wayne Bridge.

It must be slightly familiar, because last year his mother and his mother-in-law were fined for stealing in a few department stores, and his father was caught trying to sell cocaine. We do not speak, it is convenient to need it, of a poor family: Terry came to a normal school and from very small he had all the facility to play football.

I believe that to the English football players, moreover that, I would be convenient for the rest of the football players a little of the old working discipline. The one that there was personifying Bill Shankly, the mythical trainer of the Liverpool. One day, central Tommy Smith came to the training with a bandaged knee. ' Take this blindfold from yourself maricona of the knee ', it arranged him Shankly. ' The fact is that the knee hurts me ', said Smith, one of the hardest defenders of England. Shankly settled the matter: ' Your knee? This knee is of the Liverpool! '.

Since that.

It's a well known fact that drinking milk builds a healthy bone structure and as such, Thatcher's removal of free school milk has led to a generation of unfit footballers...... " you'll end up playing for Accrington Stanley..... who are they ?... exactly ! "

Ergo, It's Thatchers fault.

ps. The only footballer exempt from this is Peter Crouch who was mainlining Goldtop from the age of 3.

David James intimated that the work ethic of the younger players is not what it could be. They swan in with their diamond earrings, do some tricks and then disappear home thinking they have made it. They want wags, bling, money with a minimal amount of effort.

To be fair it isnt the players fault but he whole culture of rewarding average players with millionaires wages.

Trouble is tho that unless collectively a stance is made then someone, somewhere will pay it...

Indeed, part of the problem.

I seem to remember reading that Bradley Wright-Phillips was on £8k a week (supplemented with ladies purses) at Southampton (no wonder they went into Admin). Over £400k a year (double that of our Prime Minister) and BWP is probably not even in the top 250 in his position in the whole world?

I am aquainted with a coach at Pompey who, for a short time, worked with David James in training.. he said he trained like a man posessed and spent extra time on the training pitch working after the other players had gone.

I used to think DJ was a clown but I have a new respect for him after finding this out.

Personally I blame the introduction of Comprehensive Schools in the 60's & 70's, with their gross academic inferiority, for much of what is wrong with the country today, including yesterdays abysmal performance.

That of course was Thatcher's doing as well...she was the minister for education who oversaw the massive shift to comprehensive schools.

For the record

From Wikipedia

The largest expansion of comprehensive schools resulted from a policy decision taken in 1965 by Anthony Crosland, Secretary of State for Education in the 1964-1970 Labour government, a fervent supporter of comprehensive education. This had been the party's policy for some time. The policy decision was implemented by Circular 10/65, an instruction to local education authorities to plan for conversion.

In 1970 the Conservative Party re-entered government. Margaret Thatcher became Secretary of State for Education, and ended the compulsion on local authorities to convert. However, many local authorities were so far down the path that it would have been prohibitively expensive to attempt to reverse the process, and more comprehensive schools were established under Mrs Thatcher than any other education secretary. However, she went on to be a ferocious critic of comprehensive education. By 1975 the majority of local authorities in England and Wales had abandoned the 11-plus examination and moved to a comprehensive system.

Over that 10-year period many secondary modern schools and grammar schools were amalgamated to form large neighbourhood comprehensives, whilst a number of new schools were built to accommodate a growing school population. By 1968 around 20% of children had been in comprehensives, and by the mid 1970s the system had been almost fully implemented. Nearly all new schools were built as comprehensives, and existing grammar and modern schools had either been closed or amalgamated with neighbouring secondary moderns to produce comprehensive schools. A small number of local education authorities have held out against the trend, such as Kent. In those places, grammar schools, secondary modern schools and selection at 11 continue.
