The above is exactly how i saw it, the only thing i would say is EVERY player that gets touched in the box nowadays appeals for a penalty, no matter how soft the issue was.
Rooneys intent was to go for the ball, but hes realised hes getting nowhere near it after a bit of a body check in his scramble to try get on the far side of the defender.
This is where his intent changes and hes grabbed the players shirt, slid his legs into him to bring him down so hes not diving to the ground by himself, then hes appealed for a penalty. Then hes laughed about it with Gerrard (which the commentators at least picked up).
