Ok, I work on cruise ships, doing 6 month contracts at a time. I was due to go back to the same ship that my partner is on next week, but my employers have told me they won't send me there, despite previously confirming I could go back there by way of email. I have already had 5 weeks off but this news only became apparent when I rang them.

They have accomodated other couples in the past, there were 4 couples from my last stint, they have told me that one of the reasons is there are too many couples on that particular ship.

They also said there are too many returning staff and thats another reason they don't want to place me there.

I feel this is a little unfair as so many people have had allowances made and is very inconsistant. I have an appointment with a solicitor Monday but before then I have to tell my girlfriend we probably won't see each other again unless she transfers to me (at her own cost, from caribbean to shitty europe)

Do I have a case? Views?

How strict are your bosses? Anyway you could sit down with them and plead your case before getting the law involved?

I work for Harding Bros, who are contracted to run the shops on board, a UK company. I was on a P&O vessel.

Had a long conversation, they don't seem to care. I think it's her ex onboard. a P&O officer, who is influencing the decision.

Can understand why they would not want too many couples working on board, just get on with it fella, problem with the job I guess

Not a very strong relationship if you can't spend six months apart

Many jobs will not let couple work in same place - banks spring to mind

We'll have to see..... But ships is a bit unique in that you work, socialise and live with the same bunch of people. They do accomodate couples, which I have seen regularly, but curiously not in my case....
