I think that I stand more chance of being elected and I am not standing, than any labour candidate there so let her have a go and lose her deposit, the family can afford it.

She is what is known as a paper candidate. Labour know they have a snowflake's chance in hell of winning this seat but will still put up a candidate as it wouldn't look good for the party if they didn't bother.

They're probably thinking that by putting up an 18 year old with a known name, it'll give them a bit of extra publicity and may help to save their deposit.

"Really? One of the leading Tory councillors in Worthing is asian. Still, best not let that get in the way of your stereotypes, eh?"

Because of dubious business activities The Local Tory Party took the party whip away from this individual.

That's fair enough but...the insinuation that Tories in Worthing/Lancing wouldn't vote for an Asian is pretty low stuff.

This is interesting...was trying to find another photo of this Emily and stumbled across this link to her bebo site. Found out she's also on Facebook as well (of course, lol). The bebo stuff makes fascinating reading, a real insight.

agreed - with a very privileged background despite what the Wedgwood Benn's claim.

Actually - is there a member of that family who has EVER done a day's work in their lives or is it as George Orwell says - they'll do anything for the working classes except become one?

Er...just exactly where does that quote come from? It's quite good but I've never heard of it from Orwell, nor does it sound like him. After all, this was a guy who exhorted the middle classes to seek common cause with the proletariat: "you have nothing to lose but your aitches"

For one thing, don't you think that it would be a bit of a strange thing for an ex-Etonian to have a pop at rich people becoming socialists?

i am sure that is the case but this is something you should not f*** around with. People's lives are affected by these elections and some bit of posh fiddling about with it gets on my schnards!

Many famous politicians have cut their teeth, so to speak in a losing first election but have used the experience to go on to have great political careers.

Prime minister Benn anyone.

I seem to recall it from either Down and out in London and Paris or Road to Wigan Pier. It was whils I was doing politics at A level. THe teacher made a big deal about the difference between Orwell and his attitude where he actually lived the life of a plongeur in a french restaurant and lived amongst Lancashire mill workers as opposed to the leading lights in the Bloomsbury set. People like Bernard Shaw who marvelled at Stalin yet lived the life of a bohemian. A f***ing rich one at that.

Looks like she'll be standing in my area then. I refuse to vote for a publicity stunt who has probably never set foot in Lancing, Tim (I don't give a shit about Lancing) Loughton or the Lib Dems. Looks likely I'll be voting independent or spoiling my paper. Ho-hum.

its actually regarded as the equivalent of work experience.

You are selectyd for a seat your party knows full well you cannot win, and then they see how well you fare running a campaign.

Do well and you'll probably get a pretty safe seat next time round.
Do badly and you probably won't even get selected as potential candidate.

recent examples
david cameron (defeated at Stafford)
Gordon Brown (defeated at edinburgh South)
Tony Blair (defeated at beaconsfield)
Ming Campbell (defeated at NE Fife)

Of course she won't win, but its how she and others earn their stropes, she will do a few no hopers and eventually she will be given near winneable seats and one day a winneable seat.

We do need to reflect our population in the House of Commons, and that means more women, more blacks, asians, get some young blood in there and get more working class people in there and yes, get more people in there who have actually worked. Worked in the NHS, in offices, in Banks, under cars. The Commons is now too full of Baristers, privilaged people with Oxford, Cambridge and other red bricked Universities backgrounds. They tell us what we want, but the don't listen to us!

At least she ready to get involved in Politics, most of us whinge, slag Politicians off, don't vote and don't care.

And that why we have poor quality career Politicians representing us. FFS Cameron, Campbell are not worthy of those two great Parties.
