Whatever you do, make sure you sample a pint of Caledonian Deuchars IPA Other than the beloved H, it's one of the finest pints I have ever had the pleasure to sample (at the GBBF). Pubs worth trying are the Oxford Bar (has several rooms, so you can avoid the tourists on the Rebus trail) on Young Street and the Southsider (not surprisingly, in Southside, near the university).

Hear, hear. Deuchars is the bollox. Also sold in the Caley Sample Rooms & The Diggers.

Managed to get booked into a youth hostel at £14 in the cowgate area.

Jambo is right, Deuchars IPA is one of the finest pints I ever drank. If you go to the Caley Sample Rooms you might be lucky enough to find beer from the Orkney Brewery on tap, further proof that the Scots are capable of producing more than just Whiskey, Haggis and deep fried mars bars.
