East Stand Restaurant Review

As I was taking all the family to yesterday's game, I decided to treat us all (9 of us) to a proper meal in the East stand restaurant.

I booked easily about midday on Monday for 6pm. They have 3 sitting times, 530pm, 6pm and 630pm.

We got to the door a couple of minute to 6, and was escorted up the stairs, where a polite lady found our reservation and we were shown to our seats.

Then Jack the Lad from Heart came over. He was like the Matre D and done a great job of introducing himself and taking some of the kids names and birthdays, which got a mention later in the evening.

The restaurant itself, although many posters of Albion legends and key moments in our history, had a rather sterile look. The tables were odd, plastic with no table cloths, but perfectly set, silver service cutler and a stiff linen napkin!

The service was friendly, reasonably efficient, but amateurish. A great line from one young chap was when he saw our bottle of wine was empty he picked it up and said "You don't want any more wine, do you!" and wandered off. Actually we didn't but so much for pushing sales!

The girls shared the wine, kids had diet Pepsi and I had a pint of Albion ale.

Can't remember the price of the beer and soft drinks, but the wine was expensive. Now, I'm no cheap skate, far from it, but £23 for a fairly basic Chardonnay, and £45 for a Sancerre is simply a piss take. Even Ramsay don't charge anywhere near that for his signature restaurants! The reds were similarly priced.

Kids menu was £10 for 2 courses and £12 for 3. Ours all chose Garlic bread to start and chick Nuggs and chips for main. For the price, the chick nuggs were poor. Simple out the freezer ones, but the chips were awesome.

The adult menus were £25 for 2 and £30 for 3 courses. We opted for 2.

We were all blown away by the starters, just amazing. The mains were lacking a little though. The choice was limited. There was a vegy option and one other I forgot, but our group had either the Chicken or Fish n Chips.

The chicken was basically a quarter on a bed of mash with the rich mushroom sauce. It was good, but nothing to write home about.

The Fish n Chips were probably the best I have had in ages. Great fish, perfect batter and amazing thick double (or maybe treble) fried chips. Fresh peas, a little mushy and a great tangy tartar sauce.

The problem here is £25 for Fish n Chips and a starter is too steep IMO.

I might to it again, but would not be in any rush too. Considering it is early days for us at the stadium, it was quiet. At these prices, once poeple have tried it, they won't be in a rush to come back.

Although I love good food, at footy for some reason I would prob enjoy a Pie or Hotdog more.

Overall, excellent food, sterile surroundings, pricey, polite but amateurish staff.

Two more points. The East Stand 1901 area blocks any view of the pitch. If you could see the pictch (and the west stand) the view might be worth the price itself. But as this is hidden, I could really have been anywhere.

And timing: We had 2 courses, and finished about 730pm with a prompt 6pm start. If you want time to enjoy your meal, don't do the 630pm one and if you want 3 courses, get there for 530pm.

I ate in it on Saturday and thought it was OK. It's in a football stadium, what were you expecting!? Of course it is going to be a bit pricey, it's not the kind of place you're going to get a good value meal, is it? I thought £25 for two courses was OK, the food was alright, not amazing, but about what I was expecting. I probably wouldn't bother with it again, but then I probably wouldn't have bothered again even if it was really good, as I don't go to football to sit down for a nice meal.

Cheers for the review, I have been tempted to give this a try and it sounds like they may need some time to refine things a little.

Great review - thanks for that. Sounds worth a look. I saw the wine list in 1901 on saturday and thought the same thing.

Re the views, I guess it was never meant to have a view as they expect to put in the second tier?

Is quite expensive. You can get a three course lunch menue at Marco Pierre white L'Escargot for 18 quid.

Have to say if I wanted fish and chips I'd go to bankers. But I look forward to trying the restaurant. Were there many other people there?

Accepting that it is a football stadium and a pre match meal would you consider going to the restaurant at a time other than to watch the football purely as a restaurant or wasn't the full menu available for you to make that decision.

So it's just 'no chips' for the plebs? Where's the justice...

On that point someone I know working at the Emirates told me it's the same there on the chips, none in the main concourses. Apparently the main reason is that unless you want the 'chip' smell everywhere, the necessary ventilation to get rid of it costs a fortune.

Don't accept the 'course it's going to be pricey' I'm more than happy to accept a premium on price, but didn't get anything for it. Before they decided to give extra 1901 seats in the East, the view of the stadium from my table would have been well worth it. Now I just get to stare at a blank wall with a photo of Steve Foster on.

All in all a good meal - I may go again, but not in a hurry to

It was quiet, which worries me for it's future viability. I would have thought an evening game would have been sold out. My wife met me straight from work, so we can no time to cook or feed kids. Others must have been in the same boat? Was surprised on Monday to easily get a table for 9. If they are going to fill this place, they need to make it a bit more reasonably priced.

But as for Bankers: I love it there, but this Fish and Chips was as good. The only thing missing was Vinegar and an extra £15 from my pocket!

I would never visit if not going to a football match. I have a good selection of better restaurants in Shoreham, let alone Brighton and Hove. The food was good, but there were only 4 dishes (from each course), but I guess this is normal with the few places who do fixed priced menus.

Personally I think there needed to be a decent steak option,l and for £25 a good Fillet with one of those terrific starters would have been a decent deal.

I'm not a fan of menus where it is two courses for £25 where the cost to produce the different choices varies considerably. Do you pick what you want or what you think offers value for money?

I thought there was rib-eye? Much tastier than fillet.

My point about it being empty was that if they only just managed to serve you, what the hell would they do if it was busy?

I took my wife and kids on Saturday and agree with the OP. Looks like a conference room but good friendly atmosphere all the same. If considering going I would do the following
1. Book an early table
2. Load up your smart card in advance for 10% discount.
3. Get the waiter/waitress to repeat your order back to you before they leave your table.
4. Ask for your bill as soon as you are ready to pay to avoid any bottlenecks.

My kids were not fans of the nuggets either but the fish and chips and desserts were mighty fine.
Not huge portions but worth going to check it out all the same.
