He's f***ed this up, hasn't he.

:lolol:
It's all going pretty much as a lot of people (including me) expected. And people much cleverer than me predicted it, only to be told they were radical left lunatics, woke or unpatriotic, or some other nonsense.

Trump has warned there will be bad economic consequences in the US from the tariffs he's applying
(OK, he probably also said there will be none, but...).

Tariffs are taxes. He puts a 20% tariff in an imported item, and the exporter raises prices to cover costs, and the American taxpayer pays the difference.
So Trump is increasing the US tax burden, while making imported goods more expensive.

The only way he can punish foringers with tariffs is if Americans stop buying the imports.
Sounds like a genius plan.

Perhaps we could help out the UK wine and cheese industries but putting tariffs on imported wine and cheese.
We can then enjoy some lovely Hampshire red while eating a Cheese String and feeling super patriotic. MEGA!
It's not just foreign products either. Any US product that utilises foreign components becomes more expensive to manufacture and that price increase is likely to be passed on to US consumers.

Plus past experience has apparently shown that US producers unaffected by the tariffs realise they're suddenly selling very cheap compared to the rest of the market. Obvious outcome - they smash their prices up towards the new market level and pocket the big increase in profit.

It's amazing that a genius like Trump doesn't know any of this...

Tariffs only really work if you have multiple routes of supply or a home grown Solution. What you really don’t want to do is hit your two major suppliers with tariffs, when you don’t have an alternative supply chain. I mean no one is that stupid are they? ….. checks notes ….. apparently someone is that stupid.

As with the US car industry, presumably there are loads of modern, efficient and cost effective steel mills all over the states that are currently mothballed and just waiting to jump into production to make American steel again??
The is car industry is politically influential, it is also unionised, it’s not overly modi used compared to european and Asian car suppliers. It’s in for a shit storm of a time as they won’t compete with imports. I suspect the next tactics would be to put tariffs on car imports and drive American to by high priced prices of shit. It won’t go down well.

Out of interest apart for the tax breaks for the obscenely rich is anyone actually seeing any benefits In the US?

I think one benefit is that some citizens are coming out of their coma... slowly

I am pissed off that Starmer is being gutless in response to Trump giving us tariffs of 25% despite our trade balance with them being broadly even.

He's all "we won't reciprocate yet", while all the other trading blocks like the EU and China are meeting this Trump nonsense robustly.

If only we were part of a trading blocks to protect our interests.
