I think that perhaps more of an issue than the 'banter' between fans, is the reaction a player might expect if he were openly gay. Like most of the people in the survey, I do not believe there are no gay professional footballers.

Would this then lead to the type of abuse that black players used to be subjected to? I suspect that this is what any gay footballer would fear.

On the way to Swansea we stopped at a service station and ran into some Dagenham and Redbridge fans. A man and his 6 year old son walked past us and said "Son, look Brighton Fans. Does there boyfriends know they're here." It is rather funny really!

Be even funnier if his 6 year old turns out to be 'a friend of Dorothy's'.

Are we the only club in the country who has this chanted at us? We should be proud :lolol: After all there are loads of clubs who come in for the "sheepshagger" chant and how many clubs have a chant that is exclusively directed at them?

I doubt more than a handful of fans can actually be offended by "does your boyfriend knows you're here" chants

Unique!

I remember Port Vale away, about six years back. Absolutely hysterical watching the northeners totally confused by 5000 Albion fans chanting 'We're from a town full of homosexuals!' Utterly Albion and totally unique, embrace it! I am more than happy to receive homophobic abuse and return it in kind and see the small minded ones get irate at the cheek of it. Wolves away was funny, once we sang 'Come over here and take it up the a**e!' they complained to the local coppers. Love it!

What a mixed up world we live in if a gay man feels abused by a random chant at a football match, yet DOESN'T feel abused with a 10-inch cock up his arse...

Tricky one. Abusing individual players for being gay is not on in the same way as abusing individual players for being black, asian or whatever is not on. Trying to wind-up an opposing set of supporters though is part and parcel of the game and I doubt anyone really finds it that offensive. It's also very difficult to legislate against or deal with. I was talking to a lawyer who specialises in discrimination only the other day about this and his view is that stewards and police are loathed to wade in when large sections of the crowd are chanting at other supporters. In reality they'd have to single out one or a few fans and hope the rest would get the message. Would that be fair? It would also increase the risk of real trouble flairing up.

The only way it will stop is when society progresses to the point that chanting something homophobic is as socially unacceptable as chanting something racist. Let's face it, it tooke decades to get racist abuse that level of stigma so it's early days yet in terms of homophobic abuse. I believe one day it will happen though. Humans are largely controlled by not wanting to shame or embarrass themselves in public, no matter what views they may hold in private. When the majority of their fellow fans start to show their displeasure at homophobic chants or 'banter' then it will stop, not before.

Don't find the basic "does your boyfriend know you're here" stuff offensive at all. As far as I'm concerned it's just part of the banter between fans and should be treated as such.

Would be interesting to see how many gay people have actually complained, and how many PC do-gooders have complained on behalf of people they think should be offended, whether those people actually are or not. :glare:

I would say that the "you're too ugly to be gay" response to any homophobic abuse is perfect...it kind of insults the singers, suggests that all gay people are gorgeous and is self-deprecating about the physical appearance any of us who sing it who aren't gay (by definition we must be ugly too!)...all in just a few words, if that makes sense!

Things like race and preference are only issues if someone starts up with aggressive antagonism at a game, so until then it's a lot better to stfu about it

I see you've just removed all that stuff about Queers & knob-gobblers then. What is it with you & your anti-gay bullshit? Isn't it about time you just accepted that there's all sorts of people out there in the world & most of 'em ain't gonna do you the slightest bit of harm. And that coming from a person who used to live in Frisco & now lives in Brighton. You sure seem to make some strange choices if you crave the straight, white norm..
