Outpost Gallifrey's 2005 Doctor Who Series One Poll was conducted in late 2005 after the transmission of the series in four major countries, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. (At the time the poll was conducted, there was no indication about any broadcast in the United States; however, due to both multi-region DVD players and the modern technology of filesharing, many American fans had already seen the episodes.)

Readers were asked to rank each story on a scale from 1-5, 5 being best, 1 being worst. The votes in each rating on the scale were averaged into the total, with the number of votes suggesting the average; in other words, the ratings were on the same scale no matter if there were 4,000 or 6,000 votes.

Interestingly, the difference in number of votes between the episode with the lowest number of total votes -- Boom Town -- and the highest -- Rose -- was approximately 1500 votes. There are two explanations for the discrepancies in numbers of votes: either voters did not read the instructions that they had to vote for each episode separately, or they simply voted for ones they wanted to vote for. (In the case of "Rose," being the first on the list, it's possible that voters did not want to continue after the first vote; this same phenomenon happened in our 2003 poll with the first story, "An Unearthly Child".)

Rank Title Score # Votes

1 The Empty Child 4.73 5121
2 The Doctor Dances 4.66 5044
3 Dalek 4.59 5112
4 The Parting of the Ways 4.51 5362
5 Bad Wolf 4.26 5106
6 The Unquiet Dead 4.19 5077
7 Father's Day 4.11 4918
8 The End of the World 3.89 5307
9 Rose 3.57 6312
10 Boom Town 3.19 4861
11 Aliens of London 3.11 5002
12 World War Three 3.09 4884
13 The Long Game 2.97 4930

---------------------

That list looks pretty much spot on IMO. I thought 'The Empty Child' was the best by some way.

I cant believe the parting of the ways came fourth. Apart from the last 2 mins in which Dr 10 appears it was by far one of the worst episodes of Dr Who ever.

It had the worst cliffhanger resolution ever - materialise around Rose. So its taken 40 years and over 900 episodes to think of that. Cant hav any more cliffhangers then. Why didnt he do it in Episode 2 when she was stuck in a room when the sun shields were coming down instead of faffing about with his sonic screwdriver?

Also the episode consisted of the Dr playing with some wires in a room - nothing new there. But the fact that he didnt re-wire to exclude remaining humans and so therefore didnt use the delta wave thingy means that again the Dr wasnt the hero. Days gone past he would have done. Thats Dr Who.

Someone should tell RTD that is Dr Who not Star Trek. What was all that DEUS EX MACHINA/BAD WOLF crap all about?

But worst of all, the absolute nadir, was the way Rose managed to open the tardis console.......with a tow truck.

Russell T Davies writes tabloid TV. Interesting to note that all the bottom 6 episodes were all written by him. He may have been instrumental in bringing it back but he sure cant write Dr Who. Leave it to those that know how to write it.
