Do we need a '30 goal a season' striker?

To all those on about getting in a big name striker, comparing the current league and top scorers tables makes for interesting reading. Of the 7 clubs above Brighton in the table, only 3 have scorers in the current top 10, and it's especially interesting to look at the top 2:

1. Cardiff (scorers in 'top 10' = 0)
2. Hull (scorers in 'top 10' = 0)

(in fact neither of those teams has a scorer in the top 16)

Maybe it's elsewhere in our team where we should be looking for a greater goal contribution? A team playing 4-5-1 should be solid defensively (which ours is, joint 2nd best in league) but should be looking for a significant goal threat from midfield to make up for the lack of a second striker.

Hopefully Lopez, Buckley, Orlandi and Vicente (hurray!) will step up in the second half of the season!

Id rather have a 30 goal a season striker than not.

Like every other club in the league, if we could find a 30 goal a season striker, we'd take him.

The two different types of strikers you are talking aren't really the same thing though. Any team needs/wants a 30 goal a season striker, regardless of whether goals are coming from across the pitch. A big name striker doesn't guarantee 30 goals. Big name just means, generally speaking, you have spent a lot of money bringing them in.

however they have lots of players on say 6 or 7 goals, whereas we have 1 on 11, 1 on 5 and then a few on 2, this is why they are up there and were not,

The way we play, when we're playing well we get goals from all over the pitch. Ulloa may change this. We don't at the moment have a focal point for attacks.

If we can succeed at 'playing well' more often than not, then I really think this is far more difficult for other teams to play against. Too much focus on one individual can be negative for the team as a whole. Danger from all areas gives opposition players more of a headache.

Cardiff and Hull seem to proving this theory at the moment!

Need? Probably not, providing we have a 20 goal striker and 2 or 3 others scoring 10+.

Want? Absofuckinglutely!

Agreed. I hope Ulloa can be a focal point that brings all the other players closer to goal, as well as finishing well himself.

you need goals, whether thats from one 20-30 goal a season man or 4-5 scoring around 10.

We have great wingers in Buckley and Lua Lua but nobody capable of getting on the end of the crosses! Maybe Ulloa will do that. Same applies at corners.
