Quite weird looking at Division 4 from the 97/98 Season

We finished 91st, a whole 15 points clear of newly promoted Doncaster and 6 points behind Premiership new boys Hull City in 90th Place

Of course Rochdale were still there and we didnt have a home...

The worst 5 clubs in the entire league, and look at them now. The Albion in L1 and all the others higher.

What's staggering about that season is that we were so much worse than the year before, when we only survived on the last day at Hereford: 14 points worse in fact (if you add in the 2 points we lost for pitch invasions).

if you combined the populations of the bottom 5 clubs you'd have roughly 1.5 million ???

whatever it is it's not far off the combined populations of the rest of the league.

the nineties were shite - finish '91 90 mins from the first divison and finish the decade as the second worst club in the league (and without a ground)

Wood Out!

Looking at the other end of the table, Scarborough in the playoffs. Now they are in the Northern Counties League Division 1. Just goes to show how much things can change in 10 years.

good point!

Absolutely agree. It has hardly changed in the intervening 10 years (although I believe a club currently in League One did gatecrash for a couple of seasons).

I actually enjoy Brighton's journeys through the divisions - and not just for the chance to go to new grounds (121 currently with the Albion). I think most fans of most clubs like the change and the ups and downs (as long as they think they will come back from a down).

The big boys and the authorities (FA/UEFA/FIFA) want to remove all doubt and uncertainty from football. In doing that they will create a certainty that the game as I know and love it will die.

Just shows how fortunes ebb and flow, some of the teams who finished above us that season have now dropped out of the league into the BSP, some have gone down and come back again (Barnet and Exeter spring immediately to mind)...Scarborough seem to have done a complete disappearing act. Even when you look at the Premiership, only eleven of the teams will still be there next season and we will be playing against two of the others...three if you include MKWimblekeynes.

Very interesting.

Some people think things are bad now. Maybe they need reminding just what bad really is.
