A new 99p store is facing ‘snobby sneers’ from angry residents who claim their town is too posh for the discount shop.

Shoppers in Haywards Heath, West Sussex, have claimed the bargain store will ‘lower house prices in the area’ and have threatened to chain themselves to the railings to close the store down.

The middle-class home-owners in the commuter town have taken to internet forums to air their disgust at the plans.

One called Hawk the seagull wrote: ‘Well that’s going to lower the house prices in the area, imagine the upcoming protests on that.’

Another user called The Jasper Co added: ‘I say we chain ourselves to the entrance and shout at the owners until they close it down.’

While Middle Toe Nail said: ‘Haywards Heath has been morphing into Burgess Hill over the last few years, that’s why I can’t wait to sell my flat and move to Brighton/Hove.’

Doc Lynam expressed similar outrage: ‘This has really put a downer on my evening.

‘Shocking, shocking news. Is there an MP we can write to, any will do?’

Some Twitter users were more supportive with James G tweeting: ‘Who cares what people think? If it saves me money - bring on the bargains!’

House prices in Haywards Heath are far beyond the national average. According to website mouseprice.com a four bedroom detached home in the town will set you back £481,000 whilst elsewhere in the country the average is £344,000.

It was announced last week that 99p Stores will be opening its 181st branch on South Road, in the town and will create 35 new jobs when it opens today.

Owner of the store Hussein Lalani said: ‘We are delighted to be opening up in the town and are sure that from Friday any such murmurings will melt away.

‘When we announced we were coming to Lymington in the New Forest and St. Albans in Hertfordshire we had similar snobby sneers before opening.

‘As soon we opened these died away.

‘We will be stocking all the major brands the same as any supermarket.

‘The stuff we sell for 99p is no different from what you will find anywhere else.

‘I believe I can win Haywards Heath over, when we opened a store in Stroud, Gloucestershire, 1,500 people signed a petition to get rid of us but we served 15,000 in the first week.

‘I think people will vote with their feet.’

Graeme Barnes, the promoter of the new store, said cheap items such as sundried tomatoes, olive oil and jalapeno peppers show the chain can be posh too.

He said: ‘Haywards Heath is certainly a very challenging new opening for us. We are delighted to be opening up in the town.

‘In the last few years, we have opened up more than 100 stores and there have been the odd murmurings on Facebook and suggestions the town may be too posh for us but once we open, the same people who seemed to be making these comments are first in the queue.’

:lolol: Never ceases to amaze me people who read something on the internet and take it as face value.
Are you saying we've been duped? Too clever for me.

Welcome to the world of modern newspapers. This is easy money for a hack or stringer, you just have to know which story to pitch at which rag.

Very true, but we both know a certain stringer who would have no hesitation in making a few soiled pounds from pushing them a " story "
