Thatcher has to take responsibility for this as she allowed council tenants to buy their flats/houses but the money couldn't be re-invested in new housing stock or repairs. With councils ending up with less properties to rent out it is inevitable that after a generation or so there is a shortfall of homes available and no money in the kitty to make repairs. People who bought their council houses made a tasty profit and then moved to a nicer neighbourhood and so we now have loads of BTL landlords. Getting tenants to vote for a 3rd party to take over is just another form of privatisation , where the main motive is profit rather than being socially responsible to the have-nots in today's society. After 5 years the rents will be aligned to the private rental sector , tenants will have no security of tenure and if they cant afford the rent will find themselves homeless. Councils up and down the land are transferring their housing stock, having squandered all the rents and council tax on creating more bureaucracy. This Government is just like the previous incumbents, so they wont change anything to allow councils to borrow money from the banks to repair and bring houses up to a decent living standard.

Desprate. Good topic and thank god you finally have an avatar!

Strange that the council tax has increased by 86% on average, yet we are having cuts and there are severe shortages in various sectors. Perhaps there is the scope for PAYE locally??

Brighton and Hove council have spent £890k sending round DVDs encouraging council tenants to switch to a HOusing Association... More money down the drain...
