Checking if a painting is real

Got this really old famous painting at home looks like this:

Anyone know how to check if it's real?
Probably not but if it is...

If it makes a nice clean cut it's real, if it's a jagged cut it's fake.

Take it to a reputable auctioneers, Goringes in Lewes is a good bet.

Pay the cost to have it valued correctly

No need to pay to get an expert opinion, take it to an auction house, one that specialises in fine art, and they will be able to confirm if it is a real painting (not print) and if it is a modern copy or genuinely old. Then, if you are still curious, make an appointment to go see one of the big boys in Bond Street, and let them decide. What would you do with it if it was worth a million?
