A CHAV is the term that Traveller folk (or pikies) have always used to label their children.

In Eastbourne and especially Hailsham it has been a well used term since my early school days, probably due to the amount of settled travellers and gypsies in Hailsham.

Burchill gave one interpretation as Council House And Violent, then gave a list of names of people who were brought up in Council Houses who had done OK for themselves. Ludicrous - apart from that actress who originally played the Mitchell's sister in Eastenders - was married to Ricky Butcher, you know the one whose nose fell out through too much drugs, (Can't think of her name at the mo) she's a CHAV!
