and why was the gap under the advertising board (Tamplins at one time) and the West Stand roof too small to let the ball roll through?

another memory - the smell of beer and the sight of donkey jackets entering the North Stand (back/middle entrance) a minute before kick off after the pre match ruck (c1977).

and songs were sung much slower in those days..

ooooooooover theeeeere
ooooooooover theeeeere
annnnnnnnn dooooo theyyyy smelllll liiiiiike F......... hell!

and seeeeeeeeeeeeegulllllllllls,

did I dream this or did David Bedford run round the pitch once as pre match entertainment?

Spot on sams dad. We were two down at half time. Spider pulled one back in the second half and a certain Graham Moseley played a blinder for them.

The journey back wasn't too bad because we had played above our league status and there was never a bad time on the old Seagull Special.

That was a particularly good Seagull Special. My mate and I got into a game of brag with some older blokes and skinned them: paid for train fare, entrance to the ground and enough for a pie and chips.

It was a cracking game: the atmosphere was electric. Spider scored a great goal and they were hanging on at the end.

We have joy we have fun
We have palace on the run
But the joy doesn't last
Cos the bastards are too fast

Oh I do like to be beside the seaside
Oh I do like to be beside the sea
With a lager in me hand
Smash the Palace in the sand
Beside the seaside, beside the sea

You'll never make the station
You'll never make the station

And the ubiquitous 'You're gonna get your fuckin' heads kicked in...'

But what were the words to the anti-Palace song that was sung to the tune of the Laughing Gnome?

From Tim Carder's site....

"I was walking down the high street
When I heard footsteps behind me
It was a Palace fan
So I kicked him in the goolies
And he lay down by my side
He was not dead
So I jumped on his head
And now he is
Ha ha ha
Hee hee hee
I'm a Brighton boot boy and you can't catch me"
