Much better off picking up something second hand. Before you get anything check out MPB photographic. He is based in Brighton and deals with Nikon and Canon. Zou will get a lot more for the money then getting something new.

Canon EOS 1000D well under your budget if you shop around...some good deals out there and is a quality peice of kit.

If you end up "just" getting a bridge camera the Panasonic FZ28 is a nice bit of kit with an 18X zoom lens, I've just also got myself a Nikon D3100 which is lovely and good for low light shots but I'm just waiting for some decent weather to get out and use the thing !!
