i'm looking into buying a laptop.
mainly to give me back some space in the front room as the pc and pc-unit just take up too much room.

spec i need is 512mb
at least 1.8gig cpu
dvd writer/combo drive
decent graphics card/chipset 32meg at least
80gig h/drive

must be able to take broadband with my router as i'm supplying another pc with internet.

any suggestions with links if possible

thanks in advance

DON'T get a sony. The batteries last about 20mins!

Toshiba are very good for the money.

If you are looking for high spec on a low budget then ACER are excellent!

The new duo processors seem to be getting good reviews and work well with laptops as they use less power if battery life is an isssue.

I would always try to upgrade the memory to 1GB+ if the budget allows as it makes the hard drive have to work less hard which saves power and makes the computer faster. Upgrade of memory in laptops is normally very easy and pretty cheap www.crucial.com/uk.

my laptop has been back 4 times in less than 3 years and thier reputation for poor dependability has been well earned, they are less reliable than a lada

service/repair is farmed out to a bunch of cowboys down plymouth way and spares are not an item they keep this side of the atlantic.

helpline means about 45 mins on hold listening to crap music and being advised that you can log your problem on-line(how?your computer is f***ed,how do you log on?)

DONT BUY AN ACER

Had a very reliable Dell for years at work, light and good battery life.

Would not recommend Junior's Compaq if you are carting it around as his weighs a ton.

Go to Aldi and buy one of theirs. Fantastic spec, great price, everything that you could ever want and three years warranty.
