Two administrations would suggest they've spent way more than they have until very recently. This season they seem to have done very well on not much money and pulled off arguably the best free transfer in this league. Bastards

I think at times like this we should be giving the likes of Caskey, Kasim and cook a run in the team.

What a footballing brain.

At a time when there is need for stability, maturity and experience you want to bring in the kids.

Great idea.

Unfortunately my response to this is 'whatever'. We're not losing because of players, we're losing because of system and tactics. These are stupid comments and excuses for Gus to be making - who cares what our budget is? We've shown in games like Blackpool, Cardiff, Sunderland and Liverpool that we can mix it with the biggest of teams, so budget doesn't have anything to do with it.

So by your distorted logic if you swapped the managers of Man City and Barnet, then Barnet would rapidly rise to lead the Premiership.

I dont think so.

Current Championship parachute payments :

West Ham( 16m year 1, 16m yr 2, 8m yr 3, 8m yr 4)
Birmingham( 16m, 16m, 8m, 8m)
Blackpool( 16m, 16m, 8m, 8m)
Burnley( 16m, 8m, 8m)
Hull City( 16m, 8m, 8m)
Portsmouth( 16m, 8m, 8m) [don't think they lost these in the end for admin]
Middlesbrough( 8m)

All other teams get 2.2m 'solidarity' payments.

So that's 7 teams already with an immediate advantage.

Vicente was FREE

He will be on a big wedge though. Remember Leicester tried to galumph us at the airport.

The last time we came up under McGhee the only players for which we paid a fee were

Roberts £40k
CKR £65k
Cullip £50k
Oatway/Carpenter £45k
Watson £25k
Knight £50k
McCammon £15k
Total £290k

This time it is
CMS £2.5-£3.25m
Buckley £1m
Hoskins £500-850k
Noone £300k
Greer £250k
Harley £300k
Vincelot £150k
Total £5million rising to £6.1million

This is by far the most expensive squad in the history of the club.

No, you're distorting it, as Gus is talking about the Championship. Money helps, certainly, but we've beaten/held our own against teams with higher budgets/parachute payments such as Cardiff, Blackpool, Leeds, Birmingham, but lost to teams with arguably lower budgets like Palace and Watford. Southampton have kept a largely unchanged squad from League 1 and are running away at the top. The only teams I can think of benefiting from a high budget are West Ham and potentially Ipswich.

The FACTS are that in the PL & championship, at the end of each season if you make a league table of clubs wage bill & compare it to the actual table it won't be much different.

The geeks at Deloitte Touche publish a report each year called 'Finance in Football' and their extensive research bears this out every year. In fact, their research has proved that to finish in the top 2 in the Championship, you have to be in the top 6 wage spenders in the league, no exceptions since they started doing these annual reports.

You might not like it but that's the way it works, over the course of the season clubs that spend more on wages and consequently have 'better' squads can cope better with injuries, suspensions etc.

This information is therefore readily available if they are able to publish reports on it, and given the results its no wonder each manager wants to know where they are in the wage spending ranks, as that's a pretty good guide to where there'll end up.

There will be some local distortions but in general at the end of any season its the clubs with the biggest expendature that finish highest. Now you will probably go searching for a club that was able to defy this observation and will convince yourself it proves your point.
As Gus says, in the Championship we have the 17th largest expenditure so expect any over performing manager to make a difference of about 10 league places. Above this, you are talking miracles that rarely happen.
