You should always stand for a national anthem to show respect. I remember going to the cinema when I was in Thailand. They played a short film of the king with the national anthem and everyone had to stand up. Felt quite odd doing it in a cinema.

You'll often hear the Thai anthem in Skytrain stations in Bangkok-I think it's around 6pm. Best to stand still when all the locals do.
