Brighton Roadside Grass verges vs Democratic Rep of Congo

Couple of points.

Firstly, the weather has been perfect for grass...wet, mild (for grass) and then some sun. Compare this to last year when we'd had a hot dry spring. Chances are that the staff who cut the verges just can't physically keep up. Im pretty sure we cut the verges every 4-5 weeks...in Lewes, it's 7 weeks !!!

There is also the possibility that some of the verges are being left because they had spring flowering bulbs in them which need a minimum of 3 months in order to naturally die down before the grass can be cut.

As mentioned, it could be that some verges are being left for wildflowers and wildlife to colonise....this will become more of the norm through the city in certain areas in a bid to increase the diversity of bees, butterflies, moths, hoverflies etc etc

As for the community payback, i've been using them for over a year now at Preston Rock garden and in Preston Park. As this has been so successful, we are hopefully expanding this through the entire city parks team. We also have young offenders and the princes trust working with us.
Unfortunately, we can't put them on verge mowing as we can't allow them to use machinery due to health and safety.

Hopefully this has cleared a few things up.

Somewhat ot but can anyone explain the point of using leaf blowers if all you are going to do with them are blow the leaves from one area to another, when presumably the wind will blow them back again!

It totally depends on the situation they're used in. I blow the leaves from the front of the rock garden grass in the autumn to stop the leaves killing the grass....which they would do very quickly. It's a process that has to be repeated almost daily in the height of autumn. I blow my leaves into the shrubberies where they are then rotted down naturally.

Can't you issue them with scythes ? It was all done by hand in the old days and you never saw many one legged gardeners.
