From what I heard from the locals up here was that a woman (it's always a bloody woman...) said 'oh my goodness it's 2-2' talking about the game for survival (think it was Bolton) and then word spread with people thinking it was about us

That was sort of what I heard, although it was confusion because they said on 5 live that they were going to the City Ground, then suddenly they went to Bolton because Brum had equalised to make it 2-2 (in another important game that day).
