Buying a decent keeper now, who can challenge Stockdale, who would be a better option when Stockdale isn't producing, is the best option.
Possibly the best option - but it all depends on what other recruitment we do. It's a matter of priorities. New LB, striker(s), winger(s) are all required, so it depends on how much we have to spend on them before we can start deciding on whether to sign a serious rival to DS, or just get in a cheap safe pair of hands - or even use Casper as back up, and get in an emergency short tem loan (like we did with El-Habsi).

If that sutuation arose could we not go and get a loan like we did with Al Habsi rather than spend more big money on another keeper who may well be No 2. Can we not spend the money elsewhere strengthening the team.

We could get a loan keeper.

But that would then mean we are paying for four keepers - Stockdale, Ankergren, Brad Jones*, and Al Habsi* - the loan keeper we brought in because Stockdale underperformed and Jones isn't good enough to make it worth our while playing him in Stockdale's place.

So why bother with Jones? Rather than paying for a first choice, two back ups, and then a replacement (who may well be limited to one month, be cup tied, and not allowed to play against a parent club), it can be just as economical to sign a potential replacement who spends time as number 2, and thn only pay for three keepers instead of 4.

Also emergency loan keepers are rarely that good. Long term loan keepers can be fine - promising young keepers dropping a division to get experience for a season of first team action. Emergency loans tend to be unsettled keepers who aren't good enough to unseat the first choice at their club (such as Al Habis, Steve Harper).

*Names for illustrative purpose only. You can substitute Jones with any other similar level keeper who is simply being brought in as a number 2 just in case rather than a challenger for the number one spot, and substitute Al Habsi with any other keeper that is brought in to replace stockdale because the number 2 isn't good enough.

Al Habsi played one game, which we lost, conceding 3 goals. He was out on loan because he couldn't force himself into the first team at a Wigan side that were conceding more goals than two thirds of the championship, before first being ineligible to play against wigan, then going off for international duty to be replaced by Christian Walton who performed better than him.

What about Jaasakaleinin released by WHU or Sorenson released by Stoke to provide competition and a good cover if not No 1.

Sorenson's decided to retire from playing, Jääskeläinen is 40 so would expect him to follow suit very, very soon.

Rumours says they're both going to Hull though?
