Essentially it means something that ain't a big chain (Holiday Inn, Travelodge etc), independently-owned and doen witha bit more style and individuality than a bog-standard B&B or traveller hotel.

But it's become a catch-all term for any hotel trying to pass itself off as a bit hip and funky.

Where do you want to go? If you're talking in Brighton, www.hotelpelirocco.co.uk and www.blanchhouse.co.uk are the two best-known, I think.

Sorry but its not in the same league as The Grand

The Grand is not a 'boutique' Hotel, surely? It is part of a large chain and nothing special as far as I am concerned.*

* I haven't stayed there, but did a tour of the whole place (when I was 13) and have eaten/drunk there.

The point I was trying to make is that these Boutique hotels appear to be little more than Jumped up B&B's. I have never stayed in one but have checked the rooms on the net and they just don't grab me. I prefer the chains because on the whole when I want to splash the cash I want to know what I am getting.

I have stayed in the Grand a couple of times. It is a bit over priced but the service and the quality of the rooms are excellent. You can't beat a seaview room with a grand breakfast via room service.

I stayed in a seaview room during Norms massive concert on the beach and shared a balcony with his mum and step dad:cool:

Um, hardly.

They are generally city centre hotels with high-end, high-quality rooms with excellent food, friendly staff without being the stuffy B&B/hotels trying to pertain to excessive delusions of grandeur.

Hotel Babylon, while being a fictional hotel, is an example of a boutique hotel. In Brighton, Hotel du Vin (part of a big chain nowadays) is also one. Malmaison is another brand that springs to mind.

I stayed in the Granville Hotel last week. We stayed in the Black Rock Room which was done out like some 70's porn star bedroom, had a jacuzzi as well. A bit tatty round the edges but its something a bit different.

if you're really interested there is a series of books around the theme of "hip" hotels...

some are design/architectural classics others have trendy owners some look fantastic, most are pretentious and over priced.

Though there are some classics in France and Morocco.

How soon is now?
Stayed at the Hotel Pelirocco for the wifes birthday a couple of years back, and IMHO the best bits are the late night bar and the breakfast. The room was ok, but a bit tatty and the bathroom was just about ok. For a hundred quid + per night i'd want a bit more to be honest

I'm not sure that there's a hotel in Brighton that isn't £100+!
