I think Palace will win this - they've been able to play a weakened league team to rest key players and let their league position slide to ensure they're prepared, whereas Cardiff have continued to play a strong team and carry on pushing for promotion.

Palace to draw 1-1 tonight.

But in football it can frequently happen that a team fields a weakened team to save the first string for a big match only to lose that big match. It's like that non sense you get when one team has a midweek game and the other doesn't and people talk about the team without the midweek game being better rested and then they lose.

Cardiff may have been playing their strongest team, but that team could have more unity, be looser and have a bit of momentum.

There's no guarantee either way. Both happen, probably equally as often.

You also have to factor in motivation. Frequently the team that has to win will do against a team that can settle for a draw.

Totally agree with this - playing for a draw, even sub-consciously is incredibly dangerous. If it a simple 'win the match and we're through' it does simplify it for the players.
