It's all about his personal vanity and wanting to be PM longer than Mrs T.

He will be in office but not in power.

I hope he is hounded out sooner rather than later.

Slight flaw in that statement. Since he will resign within the next twelve months, there is no way he will be PM longer than Ms T - so it cannot be a relevant factor. She was PM for eleven and a half years. The longest TB will get is a little over ten.
