fatbadger said:Easy - my Eikon Basilike. The Eikon was a book published in secret (the first printing appeared within days of Charles I's execution), invariably in small editions so that it could be hidden amongst one's clothing. Being found with a copy was very dangerous, but it was an important marker for Royalists. Certainly all copies found by the authorities would have been destroyed. It contains Charles's last musings and prayers. My copy is a 'Madan 8', printed on the 25th of March.
The guy selling it didn't know what it was. He listed it under its subtitle - he hadn't noticed the title in Greek in small letters at the top of the title-page. As a result, nobody else spotted it (I only stumbled across it by accident while searching for something else). When I emailed him at the end of the bidding to organise postage, I called it an Eikon Basiliike - he wrote back saying it wasn't that, and did I still want it! At that point, I thought he might realise what he had done, but luckily he didn't. I kept quiet after that, and it arrived a few days later - for the princely sum of £23 including postage. Even better, when I opened the parcel, I discovered it was bound in an 18th-century Jacobite binding, adding enormously to its historical interest. I've since been able to research its ownership history back to the 1670s through auction catalogues.
Those are the kinds of bargains I like on ebay - not so much getting things I want cheaply, but getting things I thought I would never have because I would never be rich enough.

(can i sense a 'shattered dreams parkway' quote coming my way....!!)Tesco in Disguise said:be careful mate. rob got a master system for christmas last year. when he invited me over for a session with sonic and alex kidd i nearly split a log, but when i arrived i couldn't believe that i used to think it was the greatest game ever. keep it special in your mind. don't ruin the dream by actually experiencing it now - just doesn't compare these days.
