I couldn't get on the midnight charter coach from Worthing, which arrived in
Durham City around 6am, so I was told. Was forced to get a day return on the
train which cost over £26, nearly a week's take-home pay for me. At half-time a
"suicide squad" of about 50 Geordies attacked the thousands of Albion fans at
the top of the terrace, where I was standing. We easily repelled them, and I
got a couple of punches in myself - one of only two Albion matches that I so did. I remember the 2nd half being an anti-climax, being 3-0 up at half-time and on an open terrace contributed to the lack of atmosphere. The throng I was in had to have a police escort to the station, and despite that, there were several attempted attacks along the route. On the train back we celebrated with a Sunderland fan, in fact the beer was all sold when I finally reached the buffet and I had to have a half-bottle of red wine. The train was drunk completely dry by the time we reached Peterborough. Had plenty of drinking time in Brighton before the players' train arrived. There was, I believe, an extension past 11pm granted that evening (or else it was a lock-in). I was in the pub at the top of Queens Road, on the west side very near to that souvenir shop which sold cheap radios and watches. Anybody else remember being in there? We celebrated there then joined some 500 fans inside the station; you can imagine the noise we made under that roof! When the train disembarked there was pandemonium, and I think a member of staff got injured. The players had much difficulty getting through the mob to waiting cars. I must have missed the last train to Worthing as I had to hitch-hike, but getting a lift was easy with my silk scarf hanging from my belt! One of the most memorable days of my life.

I was there. Went on the famous Seagull Special train and came back with all the players. The single best day of my Albion-supporting life, just edging out the semi-final win at Highbury.

I think the reason why it was the best is that we thought the Albion had 'arrived'. Yes we knew we'd struggle in the top division; hell we might even get relegated, but the foundations for long-term success were now there, we'd never again go back to being a perennial 3rd divison club. The previous 20 years had seen the club slowly moving upwards; granted sometimes it was two steps forward and one back but now here we were, finally in the top flight and a new stadium (at Waterhall) was being mentioned to cater for the tens of thousands of fans who were by now regularly cramming the Goldstone.

If someone one had told me that 20 years after Newcastle, 20 years after our first game in Division One we'd be playing a fourth divison fixture at Withdean Stadium in front of 6000 people - and be happy just to be doing it as it would represent 'progress' ...... well, I wouldn't have believed you that's for sure.

It's my fervent wish that I live long enough to see those days eclipsed. When they reach their fifties and maybe the club are going through a bit of a slump again (as we will, though please God not as bad as the 1990s) I want the teenagers on this board to be able to say they were there when we got promoted to the Premier, they were there for the first Premiership fixture at Falmer, and they were there the day we won the FA Cup.

Up the Albion.

I was a mere 16. Wanted to go but was too young. Stayed at home with Mummy and Daddy and listened to the radio.

It was my 16th birthday which I spent mostly on the train which got there late. Fortunately arrived just before the first goal which allowed me and my 2 mates to surge down the Leazes terrace and then get a proper view. Fantastic day. Best memory is invading the ground at the final whistle and standing on a concrete crash barrier in front of the main stand when the players and Mullers came out into the Directors box to acknowledge us. Nearly got cornered down an alley by Geordies after but we the adrenalin got us back to the station. Great days. PG

An unbelievable day out. 3-0 up at half time. On the pitch at the end of the game and was somehow herded down the tunnel.
The Seagull Special on the way back ran out of drink and we made a stop at Darlington or Doncaster for 20 minutes while they re-stocked and i can't remember the rest...

I was there aged 13. Had my first sip of alcohol as someone was handing out champagne in plastic cups and my dad let me have one!
I don't think we could believe how easy it was. Three up at half time and we were in fantasy land.

Living in Suffolk at the time so drove over to Peterborough to catch train North. We had to wait for a relief train as surprise surprise the scheduled train was full. Relief train was full of Newcastle fans going home.
Walked to St James Park no problems. Great atmosphere although we were in an uncovered stand. Remember Bobin of southern TV getting howled down.
Just could not believe we were 3 up by half time.
Here was MY team, so long in the nether regions of the football league easily on the brink of reaching the promised land of Division 1.
I cried, yes I cried at half time, not for me, but for my Dad who had passed away the year before. He would have just loved this.
Getting out of the ground was not easy. We were held back and then marched with Police escort. They wanted us to go for the special train and I had a heck of a job trying to get out of the procession to catch an ordinary train. In the end a geordie copper said "you can go but run and don't stop for anyone". Stange thing was there was no geordie wanting to beat me up. They all wanted to shake my hand as we had done Sunderland down!
The London train was packed with Brighton. Champers and beer kept appearing from all corners and I was very sad to get off at Peterborough. Not sure I should have driven but it was a lovely evening and the A14 was empty.
I arrived home exultant to the Missus greeting me with "Nice Day Dear?"
NICE DAY. NICE DAY!! It was one of the best days of my life.

Stayed at Leicester Univ on the Friday night and collected a fifth supporter in the morning. .

Spooky AD. Who did you stay with and where? I was in my final year at Leicester University and just about to start my finals. Three mates and my brother drove up and arrived at where I was staying at 7am; I made them bacon butties and we drove up from there. Arrived nice and early and parked very close to the ground. Fantastic atmosphere and I don't think anyone doubted that we would get the win we needed. And so it proved. Stopped in a pub just outside of Chesterfield on the way back for a few beers. I had to take some stick from two different people as I missed both wedding and a 21st birthday party. But hey, ho, you only get one opportunity to see your team win promotion to the top flight of English football for the first time.

Was 16 at the time and went up on one of the seagull specials. It got there late so we only just got in the ground for kick off. Unfortunately we were at the back and I could hardly see the goals but I could tell when we scored.

Remember a few years ago when Hull played Newcastle in the FA Cup. They took 3500 fans and there was a comment that it was the highest away support at St James since Brighton took 10,000 in 79.

Remember it well drove up in ahired MK 1 Escort estate and then at the end tpo hear what sounded like everybody in the ground sionging GOSBTS. I am sure the Newcastle fans were singing it as well because us winning had stopped 'the mackems' getting promoted.

Was out drinking in town, met a girlfriend and spent sometime with her and her friend in a flat above one of the shops in the Lanes.

Met up with mates after, more beers, went back to the Park View (Pub) and boarded a mini-bus with some people I did not know. This was arranged by a guy named O'Toole who Guiness Dave and I know.

Proceeded to fall asleep until woken for brekkie at a caff on the A1.

Got into Newcastle at about 10-ish. Had a brief walk around and the Waye-Aye Bill directed us to a friendly pub...not. Twas only where a notorious Newcy firm drank!! But they was 'as good as gold pet' and drank merrily with us. (Summat to do with the Mackems staying down methinks).

Proceeded to ground and started the 'We are Brighton' which spread across the whole terrace.

Was near the 'off' with the Mackems skins..when they were ejected they were set upon by the same mob we had been drinking with.

Bloody brilliant!

Who on here went to St Jame's Park at the game in April 1979 when BHAFC won promotion to the top flight with a 3-1 win at Newcastle. 3-0 up at half time the class of 79 battered Newcastle in their own back yard.

We took 10000 fans.

Were you one of them ?.

Recite your memories of the day.

Went up by coach organised by someone at our factory (Beechams), we left at about 10:30 pm from outside 'The Marine' pub (now demolished) in Worthing. Arrived at Durham about 6:00 am and the Police made us stay there until about 1:00 pm when they escorted about 4 coachloads of us in convoy into Newcastle. We stood amongst a load of Newcastle fans who were great and even wished us good luck next season. On the way back through Gateside our coach was attacked by a bunch of kids lobbing bricks/stones at us, they appeared at the top of the grass banking either side of the road like a bunch of Apaches! Fantastic day, fantastic game and the memories will live with me forever.

Went with a mate on a plane that had been arranged - seem to remember it cost £59 including ticket where we had a seat in the stand opposite the tunnel and nearer to the Newcastle fans than ours. Still made it onto the pitch afterwards. Got back in time to go to the dogs for the Regency Final and then met the players off the Seagull special later that night! There was a thread earlier about supporting Albion in the 70's, it really has never been surpassed, not yet anyway....

Amazing day. I went up on a train from Reading. The atmosphere in the ground was superb and I was blown away by the fact that we were 3-0 up by half-time - that's what football should be like! Came home on the train and shared tinnies of Tennants Extra with a student Albion fan who got off somewhere in the midlands - remember shouting 'see you in Europe' as he left! (sketchy memory from this point on). Can't help thinking that we've never reached those heights again and it was 30 years ago - the promotions from Leagues 2 and 1 were great times but 1979 was fantasy land (rude awakening 3 months later at the hands of the Arse, of course).

Brilliant! I got in a bit of trouble for going cos my daughter was about to be born, but it was worth it. Main memories - Nobby's diving header, and the applause the Newcastle fans gave us at the end. I cried. Great days.

I was mightily relieved when the train pulled out of Brighton station, safe in the knowledge i could not be called back if the Mrs went into labour. my lad was born 10 days later!

Also, it snowed on that day too!.

Went up on the friday and got back on monday evening going straight to a 18th birthday party. Still dont think we had the 10 k fans that everyone says were up there though. More like 6/7 I reckon. We only had that smallish end.

It was a strange anti-climax though being 3 up at the break. I remember a punch up on the centre circle a full 10 minutes after the game had finished and the Geordie 'suicide squad' as mentioned earlier. I stayed in manchester for the weekend and remember the sunday Granada highlights and it was only then that it sunk in that we had really done it.

I was 16, the best age for such events, apparently Mullery, Bamber et al came down the carraiges ... at that point I think I had experienced a little too much of what was to become legal two years later and had either fallen asleep or was too pissed to remember. After leaving the ground it all goes a little hazy ... except arriving back in Horsham ... hazy but great memories

Have to say the geordies we met were greta as well

great day with great mates.
I walked from Brighton station back to Fishersgate staggering all the way with the sound of other fans giving it "SEAGULLS" and walking in all directions home.
someone gave me a poster (Seagulls flying high into the 1st division or something like that) and when home I tried to stick it to the front widow with sellotape and spent ages trying to get it straight, and when leaving for work the following morning, very hungover and bleary eyed looked back with pride ..............only to find I'd stuck to the window upside down.
great,great times.
