Adaware and Spybot are widely regarded as the best but I find Spybot seems to have lost its way recently and Ad-aware can be very slow.

Spysubtract has always served me well. Made by Trend Micro who have an online scanner as well.

adaware seems to get rid of anything when you scan with it. but still it let things on in the 1st place. just my opinion.
