As on the male version of this thread my choices are not necessarily technically great but have the ability to convey emotion. So I will go for PJ Harvey, Laura Marling and Corin Tucker (of Sleater Kinney an acquired taste but well worth the effort).

Still, pretty tough to beat Annie Haslam, who was pitch perfect every time I saw Renaissance live. The songs were also very demanding - for me she had way better control and timbre than such as Kathrine Jenkins;

Gosh another Renaissance fan! That makes 2 of us - I saw them live at the Rock'n'Roll hotbed that is the Congress Theatre Eastbourne in 1982 and very good they were too, marvellous voice and a dirty laugh as I recall.
