I've just watched Look North but it hasn't shed any further light.

Basically Bates told Sheff Wed back in January that he wants to invest in them.

The board don't seem keen

Now he has come out and stated the sum is 10 million but he wants to see the books.
Whether Sheff Wed will take him up on it or whether they can afford to refuse him is a different matter

Bates needs to massage his ego by being in charge of something again.

He does his work via the papers, gets them to mention the vast sums of money involved, thus putting the Sheff Wed board in a very difficult position.

He's bound to end up in control, unless the SW board have even bigger egos than him, which I doubt is humanly possible.
