I don't know what was more depressing, the testimonies of the german guards who worked at Auscwitz, the collaboration of the French (and Channel Island) authorities in turning over the Jews to the Nazis, or the hopelessness and dejection of the people being herded onto cattle trucks and taken to their deaths.


It makes FG's casual racism and bigotry even more offensive than normal. You can bet that he would have been one of the first to collaborate with the Final Solution had he been around at the time.

Fascinating and disturbing. The cold efficiency and logic applied to the extermination of the 'undesirables' was incredible.

Very efficient ... might have to do with the fact that many of the SS were engineers or Doctors. Eichmann and Amon Goth were both Univerity educated engineers ... He didn't like the brutality he witnessed and even asked for a transfer (which was denied). However..........

He admitted, at the time, that whilst Jewish Children were innocent they carried "Jewish blood and would grow into Jewish adults!" Therefore it was right to massacre them! The description of the child being smashed against the side of a truck to shut him up was particularly disturbing.

Interesting point about collaboration. If the Nazis had successfully invaded GB, no doubt our Jews would have been handed over by local authorities. (Hostile authorities would have been removed by new regime within the first few months). I see that someone daubed swastikas on Jewish gravestones in a British cemetery only this week. Presumably by a British person/people?

That's the strange thing though, it seemed that at most of the time the Nazis went about the Final Solution as a business venture. Reducing costs was always at the forefront of thier minds while they attempting to wipe out a whole race.

Yes I have, thank you very much. I'm just saying I think people in this country would have put up more of a fight against being taken over by the Nazi regime.

However, once Churchill was in power, the only way they could have any say over us, was via invasion, meaning that if it had happened their sympathisers, as happened in France would have been placed in power and our Jews would have been deported.

In 1939 over a million people in the UK signed an anti war petition, the "not in my name "brigade have always been around. You dont here about that much now do you?

Unspeakable evil. And the seeds are being sown for its return.
I normally don't post about political issues on NSC. I prefer to discuss things face to face. But I felt the need to say this.

In the Second World War our parents' generation fought the nazis and were heroes for doing so - now, across Europe including Germany, the modern day anti fascists who do the same are arrested and criminalised while police sit on their hands against increasing anti semitism and racism and the growth of a new neo Nazi movement.

Various neo fascist parties are getting up to 10 per cent in local elections in the east of Germany and approaching 5 per cent in the far more prosperous west (see the email below) Last May I saw German police literally beat a path through anti fascists so three thousand neo - Nazis could strut through the streets of Berlin. They were stopped with barricades and by sheer force of numbers, and in the major cities anti fascists are the majority.

The worst situation is in the small towns in the Eastern part of the country, declared 'national free zones' by the fascists, where all 'foreigners' have been driven out and the locals go along with the views of the Nazi gangs who run the towns. Having done gigs which were attacked by them I know something of what people who live there all the time must be going through.

And the most appalling thing of all is that these people, who celebrate or deny the Holocaust and wish for a new Third Reich, are viewed by the German state as 'legitimate political parties' who 'have a right to express their opinions...' The police have far more sympathy with them than with those who stand against them. The danger is returning, sadly helped by delusions of what constitutes
'democracy' in a civilised society. See the slogan below.


I watched the Auschwitz programme last night with my mum, one of whose greatest friends fled to England from Germany just in time as the jackboot descended and lost all her family in the death camps. Though my mum has Alzheimers now she nevertheless has a perfect memory of that time. As we watched I thought of my German friends, out there on the streets, confronting this evil a second time to protect their communities.

There is foul anti semitism and racism across much of Eastern Europe (as witnessed during the England games against Poland and Slovakia) but its return in Germany utterly defies belief.

I am sure everyone here would applaud these people, and the thousands like them all over Germany, who are fighting to make sure this evil never happens again.
