Because there are some particles (Higgs-Bosun) that Physics says must exist otherwise there would be no such thing as mass but no one has ever found them. I would argue that mass obviously exists otherwise when I stand on the scales I would weigh nothing and I dont need a Trillion Dollars and an 18 mile underground tunnel full of magnets to prove it.
